    Cons

Management is horrible. Environment is like a prison in the Business Office.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Interesting and relevant work

    -Great benefits

    -Travel opportunities

    -Excellent work/life balance

-The warm fuzzies that come with working in public service

    Cons

-Pay (for STEM employees at least) is not on par with the private sector. I've personally seen people who otherwise loved their job leave because of this.

-Little to no technical training for new employees. Unless you walk in with lots of experience, you may find yourself having to bug people to get answers. The upshot here is that there are plenty of classes offered for you to pick up the skills you need. The downside is you have to figure out which classes to take, as there is no formal training plan.

-Dealing with the bureaucracy can be a pain at times as well

    Advice to Management

Make sure your employees are trained up before turning them loose! Pay must be addressed as well or recruiting and retaining STEM talent will continue to be an issue.

    Advice to Management

Let lower level managers be involved in decision making process for changes. Communication up and down is key. Let employees know the short and long term goals of the organization. Reward success and promote internal experienced employees to management positions.
