I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large organization with formal business processes. Easy to understand position roles, integrate into various offices, and make a difference to improve national security.

    Cons

Large organization with formal business processes that can become bureaucratic and slow. Projects take patience and diligence which often leads to restarts as government military officials change stations and assignments.

    Advice to Management

The military leadership rotates steadily to train leaders (~2-3 years). What can be done to stabilize senior government officials so that they have background knowledge and a longer term outlook for organizational development.

Great people with a drive to succeed! Plenty of growth opportunities with satisfying compensation. You have the opportunity to go up the chain of command if you have the desire to.

    Cons

Working hours can be long, the opportunity to deploy overseas exist for active duty members and dod employees. Be careful what you ask for because you might get it.

    Advice to Management

Find the balance of work and family, take care of people first

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people and good mission. Serving your country and defending the flag. Can't say enough about how great it is to serve the nation.

    Cons

Bureaucratic and slow to react to change and new technologies. Too many old heads who quite frankly need to go. Bring in young blood and new thinkers. Avoid and resist antibodies.

    Advice to Management

Trust industry to transform our way of doing IT for the department. We don't have all the answers or know what we're doing sometimes. OPM is a good example of what is wrong with US government IT.
