I have been working at US Department of Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues, impactful mission, national reach. There are many dedicated staff and innovators driving impactful programs. The clean energy programs are very good.

    Cons

Leadership above the program office director level is basically useless, so that means there are 4-6 levels of management/"leadership" that add little to no value. They create a lot of churn just to get up to speed then move on to other jobs without adding much. Frequent changes in leadership can result in inconsistent policies, guidance and procedures. Cumbersome practices. Internal and external service units aren't always customer service oriented making it difficult to do business with the agency.

I have been working at US Department of Energy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is filled with passionate, hard-working staff who are trying to make the world a better place.

    Cons

It's a federal bureaucracy, so there are typical obstacles at times --- particularly with anything that touches hiring or procurement.

I have been working at US Department of Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The other career staff employees (FTEs) at the DOE are fantastic. No matter the political environment, they are extremely dedicated to executing the missions they are given and they do it professionally and with good spirits. The DOE also has lots of great opportunities for training - plenty of working lunches, seminars, and in-house speakers to learn about the myriad functions of the Department outside of your own office. Phenomenal work-life-balance.

    Cons

Obviously, compensation is less than most comparable private sector positions. GS pay scale can make hiring difficult and promotion opportunities limited and confusing.
