I have been working at US Department of Justice full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You are able to apply your skills to important matters, there are ample opportunities to gain experience, work-life balance is good, career colleagues typically are knowledgeable and passionate about doing the right thing.

    Cons

It is a law enforcement organization, so there can be a lot of mustaches and BS at times. Acronyms are brandished with abandon. Administrative support lacks any quality control. Changes in administration can derail your ability to advance your career if you do not want to work on the initiatives that the current administration is pushing. The political appointees often lack ethics, but make up for it with their terrible judgment.
