I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Loved the people that I worked with, there were the normal bureaucratic processes that were annoying but people generally tried to help and navigate the process with you. Good benefits, solid salary and great building at HQ.

    Cons

Upper management was often disorganized and made conflicting requests. The "why" of requests was never explained and so you often had to guess at what people were wanting. Not a ton of flexibility in my department for work from home/ flextime.

    Advice to Management

Listen, listen, listen. Sometimes they are just an echo chamber within the front office and don't reach outside for advice or solutions. Sometimes there was a "gotcha" attitude instead of an attempt at positive problem solving.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I had the opportunity to learn a great deal due to the component's need for me to multitask. My immediate supervisor and the majority of the team I worked with were amazing. A lot of potential.

    Cons

Senior management in my component was clueless and unreasonable. No one was ever on the same page and even if you produced exactly what was asked for, it still wasn't what they wanted. Little to no room for growth for anyone not an attorney or engineer.

    Advice to Management

Get in the same page! And cut some of the bureaucratic red tape that is so unnecessary and counterproductive to the public and all initiatives. If you want to keep good employees, provide paths for advancement.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

Mission. My agency's mission is to protect people and the environment. I love coming to work everyday to support the mission.

    Cons

Bureaucracy coupled with poor decisions made by leaders has lead to low morale and the best employees finding work elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Empower your trusted hard working employees, hold poor performers accountable, make decisions always with the agency mission in mind and not with self-protection and hubris.

    Pros

Great environment. Great benefits. Locations in every state and territory.

    Cons

Much of the work is contracted out. Hands on is becoming rare.

    Advice to Management

Federal workers instead of contractors is better because of their dedication and long term investment. Security is better also. Contract workers have short term interest in organizations they work for. Here today gone tomorrow. Contract employees may create and possibly implemented 5, 10, 15 year programs. However, their dedication is to the company that employs them, not the long term program they help create and implement. If you value dedication security and the belief that tax payers money is better in the hands of workers, than in the offshore bank accounts of CEOs, hire more Federal workers.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work is rewarding and good colleagues, and work life balance is quite good.

    Cons

In 2015-2016, lots of turnover, and loss of valuable experience and personnel, which negatively affected morale and work productivity. Several FRA senior managers and SES personnel lack railroad expertise and effective leadership skills, including key positions in Administrator's office, Office of Safety, and Office of Chief Counsel.
