I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work is rewarding and good colleagues, and work life balance is quite good.

    Cons

In 2015-2016, lots of turnover, and loss of valuable experience and personnel, which negatively affected morale and work productivity. Several FRA senior managers and SES personnel lack railroad expertise and effective leadership skills, including key positions in Administrator's office, Office of Safety, and Office of Chief Counsel.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

    Good Pay and benefits package

    Cons

The job is less about safety and more about reaching the quotas that are required of the job. But fall behind in reaching the numbers required takes a massive effort in order to get back on track. Very high stress job environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop pushing employees to get number after number. Except quality work over reaching the quantity required.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Its kind of like college in that everything you need is nearby.

There are food joints and grocery stores surrounding the building.

There's a gym and dry cleaning on-site. There's a cafeteria. The work we do actually attempts to change America for the better. My higher-ups are very helpful and supportive.

There is actual upward mobility if you decide to stay.

Government benefits are always a plus too.

    Cons

Oh my goodness, the starting pay is terrible! How one can afford to live comfortably at this rate is difficult.

There's the standard bureaucracy of government work, of course.

    Advice to Management

You've gotta go up on entry level salaries.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

+ Plenty of very interesting and dedicated people to work with.
+ Not political, which is hard to say in Washington these days
+ Work / Life balance reasonable

    Cons

    - No real motivation to work harder or put in the extra effort
    - Organization can feel too large
    - Management is severely lacking.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your young, smart employees and help give them an opportunity to succeed.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

Diverse employee pool, socially beneficial outcomes, decent work programs (such as "details" to other projects), decent facilities

    Cons

Horrible management, poor task organization, low morale, zero incentive for hard work, lazy people stay and energetic people leave, difficult to team build due to geographic dispersion and functional territoriality

    Advice to Management

Managing means defining goals, organizing tasks, understanding and properly engaging the workforce, and providing necessary resources, not demeaning, ordering, or obstructing.

    Pros

    Advice to Management

    Too much micromanaging
