I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Varies person to person, but I was given a lot of respect and freedom to manage my own schedule and deadlines and my work was valued. Telework options are nice and flexibility of hours is perfect for raising kids (daycare in building too).

    Cons

Work can be dull, tedious, and repetitive. The analytical work in my group was very simple and not sophisticated and I found it very difficult to evolve my skills to keep pace with the private sector. Pay also tends to rise quickly but then plateau quickly as well. There's also little push for high quality ("good enough for government work" unfortunately has an element of truth to it).

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting, helpful coworkers, the IG is very personable and a solid leader

    Cons

Project managers are promoted for being good auditors and in some cases, sycophants, and not for being good communicators with employees. Project managers have a lot of responsibilities and for some less than fabulous managers, that takes away from learning the audit itself.

    Advice to Management

Think carefully about who you promote and watch out for sycophants.
