I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Its kind of like college in that everything you need is nearby.

There are food joints and grocery stores surrounding the building.

There's a gym and dry cleaning on-site. There's a cafeteria. The work we do actually attempts to change America for the better. My higher-ups are very helpful and supportive.

There is actual upward mobility if you decide to stay.

Government benefits are always a plus too.

    Cons

Oh my goodness, the starting pay is terrible! How one can afford to live comfortably at this rate is difficult.

There's the standard bureaucracy of government work, of course.

    Advice to Management

You've gotta go up on entry level salaries.

I worked at US Department of Transportation as an intern

    Pros

The people you work with are incredibly personable, humble and relaxed in general. They will do everything they can to see you succeed in the federal government or in the private sector. They have many connections to other departments as well as outside companies.

    Cons

The people are not as passionate about their job as others working in the private sector. Mainly you see federal employees who are waiting to retire in their job.

    Advice to Management

Look into teleworking and working from home to see if it really is an efficient option. People telework on Mondays and have a day off on Fridays, so not much really gets done on those days

I have been working at US Department of Transportation as an intern

    Pros

As far as the work conditions go: I appreciate the autonomy (amidst camaraderie in the department), the fact that my boss will always intervene if necessary and having coworkers in roles that take care of the tasks that I dislike (invoicing, invitation lists, etc.), rather than former jobs where I had to take care of all of these things. I am honored having repeat clients who trust that I will exceed expectations.

    Cons

Despite the fact that they’ve made half of my hair turn white, and nick-named me “Cruella,” I really love my staff. The other thing that I love about my job is the people that I meet. Our clients are great too. No two days are the same and all these people help keep them interesting.

    Advice to Management

I love my colleagues and that I get to work with a lot of different people from various fields. My work is in organisation, project management and technical for a handful of technical developments. And I also love that I am left allone when on vaction, since I really need the rest to be fit for the rest of the year.
