I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Its kind of like college in that everything you need is nearby.

There are food joints and grocery stores surrounding the building.

There's a gym and dry cleaning on-site. There's a cafeteria. The work we do actually attempts to change America for the better. My higher-ups are very helpful and supportive.

There is actual upward mobility if you decide to stay.

Government benefits are always a plus too.

    Cons

Oh my goodness, the starting pay is terrible! How one can afford to live comfortably at this rate is difficult.

There's the standard bureaucracy of government work, of course.

    Advice to Management

You've gotta go up on entry level salaries.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

+ Plenty of very interesting and dedicated people to work with.
+ Not political, which is hard to say in Washington these days
+ Work / Life balance reasonable

    Cons

    - No real motivation to work harder or put in the extra effort
    - Organization can feel too large
    - Management is severely lacking.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your young, smart employees and help give them an opportunity to succeed.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

Diverse employee pool, socially beneficial outcomes, decent work programs (such as "details" to other projects), decent facilities

    Cons

Horrible management, poor task organization, low morale, zero incentive for hard work, lazy people stay and energetic people leave, difficult to team build due to geographic dispersion and functional territoriality

    Advice to Management

Managing means defining goals, organizing tasks, understanding and properly engaging the workforce, and providing necessary resources, not demeaning, ordering, or obstructing.

    Pros

Great, devoted people in a healthy environment

    Cons

A lot of "champions" in the office. Need to be better at working as a team and distributing tasks on projects

    Advice to Management

    Too much micromanaging

    Pros

Pay wasn't too bad and the office was near the Navy Yards Metro.

    Cons

We had to give a status to the feds every morning at 8AM. This included power point slides. E-v-e-r-y morning. There were some wacky people on the team. One guy read the bible to me in the morning and was OCD about most tasks. They even had to screen new people for how well they thought they would be able to put up with this guy. There were meetings where people started yelling at each other. Not a very professional working environment.

    Pros

Mostly great people to work with, and a relatively positive environment. I enjoyed the work and getting to work with a diverse group of professionals within several "branches" of the department I was selected to work.

    Cons

As an intern, a LOT of work was pushed my way that really had NOTHING to do with the job title/description I was hired to do. I was hired as an "Automation Specialist;" a term that is used VERY LOOSELY apparently in the federal government.

    Advice to Management

Don't play favorites. If someone is qualified to do a job, allow them to do it. And obviously, help "interns" get permanent work if that's what they're seeking because you're getting first-hand knowledge of their skills set.
