I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits (although they are costly) to include generous vacation and pension.

    Cons

Management doesn't care about nurse's work/stress load, only about making themselves look good through "checking the boxes" and making sure their numbers look good. Nursing techs don't do their job. Nurses don't have protected breaks and rarely get an uninterrupted 30 minute break. Work 40 hour vs 36 hour weeks in private sector. Lack of leadership overall and there is no accountability with employees because they're protected by unions and can't be fired. Medical teams/interns don't communicate with nurses and treat them like second class citizens. I could go on and on and on...

    Advice to Management

Stop putting everything on the shoulders of nurses. We are burnt out! It would also be great to hold other disciplines accountable and hire nursing techs that will do their job and actually assist the nurses.

    Pros

Serving the Veterans is the greatest Pro. Pay, Leave, Benefits, and TPS are a plus too.

The defination of ONE VA is really be ONE VA. Standarlization should be key in every VA from the PPE, Products, uniforms and Services we provide.

    Advice to Management

Really understand and be able to identify with frontline team members. Eliminate the words staff and employee replace with Team Member. Provide Management a better way to hold Team Members accountable for performance and conduct without having to fear the Unions.
