I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time

    Pros

It was nice to be able to serve other veterans.

    Cons

Management was hands off and employees were left to manage themselves (even on 1st shift). No supervisor on 2nd and 3rd shift causes people to be lazy and not want to help each other to get the job done.

    Advice to Management

Get involved with each shift and it would help if a supervisor was on every shift overseeing who was working and who was goofing off.

    Cons

All VA Medical Centers do not operate the same. Upper management need to be more compassionate of their employees, giving them incentives, boosting morale, and creating an environment of camaraderie.

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Autonomy in patient care (maybe too much). Enjoy serving veterans. Unbeatable health benefits. PTO if you can find time to use it.

    Cons

Middle management is out of touch with staff, mediocre, and promotes the status quo. Too much red tape and redundancy. Too much administrative work and not enough patient care. Too little support from management in growing your department/services and professional growth/personal goals. Work horses are given more and more work from lazy managers until they burn out.

    Advice to Management

Know the needs of your staff!
