I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working with the nation's most honorable patients - Veterans! Pay is negotiable which no one tells you. Lots of experience you will gain. Great tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Parking is off site and expensive. LPNs are not utilized well or appreciated. Supervisors tend to micromanage and do not address the concerns. Not in the best interest of patients. If you get your RN you have to spend 3-5 years as a floor nurse before you can work as a case manager.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Benefits, work-life balance, job security

    Cons

Red tape bureaucracy, poor management, incompetent, lazy tenured employees. Management is uneducated and stall in their positions. If you are a young professional in your twenties or thirties I would not recommend working here. You will be used, abused and over worked. You will be surrounded by a bunch of idiots who do nothing all do, afraid to embrace change for the better and are paid well more than you due to the retarded GS pay schedule.

    Advice to Management

Recognize your talented employees who actually perform. Get rid of the tenure employees in senior positions who lack the knowledge, skills and abilities to do their jobs. Take some tips from the private sector industry on the proper way to run a hospital. Or just let the private sector take over the VHA section and let the govt focus on just the VBA (which is a separate monstrosity I wont get into )

    Cons

They staff using mandation so if your staff is not dependable it can be an issue. They pay you well for staying over.

    Advice to Management
