I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits and pays higher then community and working with and for my fellow veterans has been enjoyable and dare I say fulfilling.

    Cons

Coworkers with a sense of entitlement and a misguided idea of we have to do everything for my fellow veterans instead of empowering us veterans to make choices that meet our needs and not the social workers idea of how we should live.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the useless unions. My experience has been a mixed bag. Either the staff has been great and upper management Yahtzee Yahtzee or upper management great and supportive and staff or coworkers just phoning it in for the check.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs (Less than a year)

    Pros

One of the best reasons to work at the Va Hospital is having the opportunity to service the veterans who has given so much for us.

    Cons

One of the down sides of working at the Va Hospital is the problems we incur each day when the veterans at the CBOCs clinic have to go through several phone calls or send notes just to be able to communicate with their doctors.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

stability, decent pay in some places, nice benefits, retirement, chances to advance if you are willing to move

    Cons

The incredible mess of government red tape. I have worked at two VA medical centers and they are both very different, frustrating for different reasons. There is so much red tape not much gets done. Safety is not really a virtue here and since no one can be fired they keep on terrible employees, including supervisors. There is so many nonsense steps to EVERYTHING that even small things take forever to get done. I was at work almost 3 months before I could do my job just waiting on a desk chair, keys, desk phone, cell phone and laptop (without which I cannot do my job).

    Advice to Management

LISTEN to your staff and get rid of unnecessary steps to everything.
