Kansas City VA is a mess

Dec 23, 2020 - Social Worker in Kansas City, MO

      Pros

Pay and benefits are good Ample CEU opportunities Free clinical supervision

      Cons

Every VA is different and you don't know what you will get from one VA to the next. Kansas City VA Medical Center is a mess. The effect of years and years of bad leadership are showing. Kansas City VA follows the Peter Principle and happily promotes people to their level of incompetence and that's quite apparent when you look at every social work supervisor. For some reason, Kansas City likes to promote bullies -- supervisors will yell, scream, and cuss at their employees. People who ask for help when they're struggling are punished. Executive leadership is aware of these issues but don't care enough to address them. They've also had a hand in ensuring the bullies are promoted. Toxic, verbally abusive social workers have been given promotions they don't even qualify for by the director. Yes, you read that right -- the director's office directly promotes people who are verbally abusive to vets and staff, while quality staff members are black balled. There's also not enough social workers to meet the needs of the clients we serve, but again, don't worry, because the director's office knows and doesn't care. Avoid this place like the plague.
