I have been working at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to start an entry level role and eventually move up to more senior roles. Benefits are hard to beat. Time off can be great.

    Cons

The pay is OK its on the low end of the spectrum. Schedule is very inconsistent. Potential for long periods of zero communication with the outside world.

    Advice to Management

Create incentives to hold on to IT personal, otherwise you are wasting millions of dollars on training only to have them jump to the private sector.

The Marine Corp was overall a great experience, I learned valuable job skills in a very accepting environment where you truly feel as part of a team and brotherhood.

    Cons

A very varying schedule...long nights to be expected

    Pros

You have the choice to drive yourself or just exist. Honest hard work, expertise, and results are recognized. There are opportunities to grow from almost anyone you meet and all the assistance programs. Most of all, there are always new people to meet and many of them can be inspired by you and become better Marines and people from your example, which is very rewarding. You might not be taught everything you need but there is always somewhere to go find out.

    Cons

Some units withhold information or distribute it selectively, or in a very untimely manner. This results in horrible time management for work and inevitably your personal life. Sometimes politics between people and especially undeserved egos and inappropriate relationships get in the way of accomplishing simple tasks.

    Advice to Management

People in leadership positions have let down less experienced people indirectly by not showing them the best way to be. The worst result of this isn't only distrust and missed deadlines, but new leaders who don't know how to run things. Finding a trustworthy teacher is a dime a dozen.

I worked at US Marine Corps full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent work environment, lots of flexibility working in a unit, but with very, very high expectations for program execution.

    Cons

Sometimes people working outside the unit on the admin side made tasks difficult.

    Pros

Teamwork - fellow Marines aren't just "coworkers", they become more like family. And occasionally great opportunities will arise: training exercises in exotic locations, interesting positions.

    Cons

"Hurry up and wait", and a general lack of choice in relocation (PCS) moves, positions, and deployments. Can often (but not always) be rough on families as a result.

Nothing will ever be the same. You work with some of the best people. You will never be able to say that you didn't effect people in a good way

    Cons

    Away from family
Some people you work with are stuck in their ways and don't do well with being open minded

    Advice to Management

Be ready to enjoy the suck
