I have been working at US National Guard part-time

    Pros

Once a month, allows students to continue school, assist with Tuition Assistance, option for deployment

    Cons

Slow promotions, pay is late and/or incorrect, contracts are not thorough or accurate, food is mostly MREs during training even at home station, hard to get promoted, difficult to get leadership to support the "little" soldier, job availability is limited to the "who you knows"

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the Troops who are out in the trenches actually doing the work because management is only going to report the good or what they deem "looks good", not the downfalls and the honest needs of the troops to include pay, adequate billeting/lodging, decent food especially when at home stations, accurate promotions for ALL troops who are eligible. More pop-up visits during trainings to see how the troops are being taken care of. Enforced demands and reprimands for leadership who FAIL their soldiers and less blame on the soldier who "do not know" and/or rely on leadership to educate and mentor.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at US National Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The soldiers, airmen, and civilians are outstanding and committed. They are proud to serve the citizens of the state and the country.

    Cons

Senior leaders are out of touch and self serving; some are political appointees. This tends to cause friction, hamper initiative, and drive out excellence.

    Advice to Management

You must be ethical and transparent in order to earn respect. Your people deserve the best.

I worked at US National Guard (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great leadership training, work with all types of people, experience personal challenges regularly, and still get to pick where you live and what you do as a civilian.

    Cons

Red tape! As an officer, the Guard takes over your life and your family. It's not a job. It's a service. Think of it as something you do as a patriot, not for the benefits.

    Advice to Management

    Soldiers first.

I have been working at US National Guard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great experiences and endless opportunities for full time employment. Civil and Federal missions keep you busy in an ever changing environment.

    Cons

    No longer the "weekend warrior"
Takes away from family life... hard to get that perfect balance of work and family life.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to those coming through the ranks and support them with decisions to switch MOS's ... going to loose a lot of great Soldiers due to units not supporting their wants to change it up.
