I worked at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Diverse group of people, global travel, continuous personal growth, great benefits, and purpose.

    Cons

Long hours, short notice travel, extended periods of time away from loved ones, authoritarian leadership style, and slow to implement change.

    Advice to Management

Change promotion structure for senior enlisted leaders and major command officers. The current model where senior leadership changes every 18-24 months does not allow for organizational change. Additionally, the effectiveness of senior leaders in these short duration tours of duty do not provide quantitative analysis of their results. A constant theme of “waiting out” senior leaders is common among staff’s at major... commands. Successful corporations do not have senior leadership turnover every 18-24 months. The Navy (US Military) needs to rethink the current promotion system and the length a leaders stays in a single position.

I worked at US Navy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Steady pay, great benefits, travel, free education

    Cons

The MA (police) rate is full of toxic leadership, mission always comes first, the training is not great, extremely cut throat, you’ll succeed but only if you make your leadership look good and keep your mouth shut and always, no matter what do what you’re told. If you’re in a “mission first” rate such as MA, even medical comes secondary, they’ll do anything to keep you “uploaded” (standing watch), sickness,... exhaustion, mental health, it’s all secondary, Medical’s famous line is, “you’ll sleep when you get out”.
