I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Flexible

    Great Initial Experience

    Good pay with secure job

    Cons

Promotions don't change role/responsibility. You just do more of the same work.

Introverts dream job, extroverts nightmare since there is very little interaction with colleagues or clients.

Experience is very niche and combined with flexibility and pay makes it difficult to leave and transition to a new career with more growth.

I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work Life Balance, Great Campus, Easy access to transportation(Bus, Metro,Freeways), Situated in Old Town Alexandria and not the center of DC

    Cons

Way too many unqualified wanna be managers playing the ladder game without regard to those they step on on the way.

    Advice to Management

Start firing the unqualified people that have been placed into positions because, "That's the way we do things" which is indicative of the federal government.

I worked at US Patent and Trademark Office (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Flexibility, Great compensation, nobody will bother you except supervisor/Primary

    Cons

This is really great if your supervisor is nice with you. Otherwise 99% chances that you are getting fired within a year or your supervisor will give you so much hard time that you have to leave the job as soon as possible. There is no way of defending yourself, because director is also bias and never wants hear form the Examiner. Although you are a great employee. Another thing is that since supervisor assign applications to the Examiner. Therefore, if your supervisor doesn't like you then he will give you the hardest and lengthiest application. Some time you will find that you submitted an application to your supervisor, although there is nothing wrong with your writing, still your boss will send it back to give you hard time.

    Advice to Management

FIx the system. There are so many things going on. Supervisors and Primary's are abusing there power. Junior Examiners are suffering a lot although there application quality is better than Primary's. Over 60% of the Junior Examiners are doing Voluntary Overtime just to meet the Production requirement although its illegal by Laws.

I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility with work schedule is great. There is no set schedule and the ability to do 100% teleworking anywhere in the U.S. when you reach a certain grade and pass a test. There is the option for career advancement

    Cons

As a patent examiner there is a biweekly production quota that can be very stressful. There is a 4 month training process for new examiners but it does not really prepare you for processing cases in some instances. Also a negative is you are essentially at the mercy of your supervisor (or the person that approves your cases) such that you really have to go along with what they have to say which leads to inconsistencies when compared to other supervisors.

    Advice to Management

provide more one on one training to new examiners with more applicable examples

Nice building and great cafeteria with awesome food choices for breakfast and lunch. The building is close to two metro stations both on the yellow line, Eisenhower and King St.

    Cons

Unrealistic and unattainable expectations! It is not about doing the job, it is more about managing the chaos and playing the political game of protecting your back in an extremely fast paced environment where a 7am - 7pm workday was never enough.
