I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Once you are fully trained and up to speed, you are able to work on challenging materials with little micro-managing.

    Cons

People sometimes thinks lesser of you or talk down to you as a government employee.

    Advice to Management

Don't let minor public issues drastically change office practices.

I worked at US Patent and Trademark Office full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility and work life balance. Great pay. Good social collegial atmosphere. Opportunities for noncompetitive advancement (do the work and be good and it — you'll get promoted).

    Cons

Repetitive work. Depending on your art, you may not often see groundbreaking technology. Too much job satisfaction hinges on your SPE. Some are good; some aren't.

    Advice to Management

Some SPEs need more management training.

    Pros

I haven't been working at USPTO long enough to leave a comprehensive review. However, so far its been a positive experience. I will leave a more detailed review later.

    Cons

Slightly political environment that needs to be navigated through. No telecommute at the moment for my position. From what I hear the patent examiners do have quotas they have to meet every 2 week cycle.

    Advice to Management

No complaints so far, but I will update this review at a later date.

Challenging and rewarding work. As long as you get your work done, nobody cares when you work.

    Cons

It is difficult to transition to other engineering roles after being at the PTO. It is also a slightly antisocial job.

I have been working at US Patent and Trademark Office as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work Life Balance, Great Campus, Easy access to transportation(Bus, Metro,Freeways), Situated in Old Town Alexandria and not the center of DC

    Cons

Way too many unqualified wanna be managers playing the ladder game without regard to those they step on on the way.

    Advice to Management

Start firing the unqualified people that have been placed into positions because, "That's the way we do things" which is indicative of the federal government.
