I worked at USA TODAY Sports Media Group full-time

    Pros

Some good employees that are passionate about the business
Flexibility, being able to work remote

    Cons

Political, lack of organization and diversity, revolving door of strong talent leaving or laid off. The group used to have over 150 employees and it feels like it is down to a handful within the Sports group. Lateral direction within company

    Advice to Management

Actually find talent that are half decent at their jobs instead of hiring friends

    Pros

USATSMG was a new sports division within Gannett. They had a great vision in the beginning, but were not able to execute on the product side.

    Cons

Good people, but not in the right roles. Too many traditional media people and not enough data driven digital leaders on board.

    Advice to Management

They're all gone now. Not much to say, but I need to get at least twenty one characters so i'll keep writing.

    Pros

Work at a high-profile company and attend a lot of great events.

    Cons

Horrible place to work. Tremendously bad leadership that are a serious click that are all friends and only lookout and care about their friends in their small little group of higher-ups.

    Advice to Management

    Treat people better.

I worked at USA TODAY Sports Media Group (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Understanding bosses who do not pressure you. Flexible work schedule. It is a dream job. You are paid royalties on some sales over the base $125 per job rate.

    Cons

Company only pays expenses if you travel for a job. You need your own very expensive gear. Expenses and depreciation eat up much of your pay. Much of your royalty sales comes from submitting stock which adds hours to each job. Little chance for upward mobility. No benefits.

    Advice to Management

Would have liked a higher base pay, but it is a matter of supply and demand and there is not shortage of people looking to do this job.
