I worked at USA Today as an intern

    Pros

Learned a lot, good hands on experience and got to participate in large collaborative products

    Cons

No formal program for interns to learn about the company. Frequently felt like an after thought that was there to do work no one else wanted to do.

I worked at USA Today full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good colleagues. Excellent brand recognition and access

    Cons

Every quarterly earnings report has to be watched for signs of layoffs. The constant fear of a jittery management that would give up on its latest plan at the first sign of trouble was the biggest negative. Benefits were terrible, too. Bottom line: There's no future here unless they figure out the Internet better than they have -- a lot better. Most people in the newsroom were older, and trying to nurse their job until retirement. No one should go there with longer than a two-year horizon. If you want it to be a stepping stone to something else, go do it -- and don't dally. The economics of this business are a beach eroding under your feet in real time. Oh, pay's low too.

    Advice to Management

Develop a paid content strategy. For God's sake! People internally have told you that for years. You will chase clicks with undifferentiated content all the way to the graveyard. Also, buy Tribune, but you know that.

I worked at USA Today (More than 10 years)

    Pros

USA TODAY is still a very visible news brand, even though it has virtually disappeared from the hotel hallways it once ruled. Its website is competitive, and the technology you get to use is pretty good. Generally a decent bunch of people too. Beautiful HQ in McLean, Va., which is currently being renovated.

    Cons

It's a dying business, and despite numerous turnovers in top management there has never been the kind of innovation needed to bring in the dollars necessary to stave off a constant round of layoffs. 24/7/365 business that never sleeps, so burnout is high.

    Advice to Management

You're being outflanked by Quartz and other more nimble startups. Ditch your legacy print business and bring in people who understand the Internet for real.

I worked at USA Today full-time

    Pros

Lots of responsibility, (based on abilities, not necessarily interests). Some forward-moving avenues / departments. Strong industry name. Casual work environment. Many good employees (but they don't necessarily stay long).

    Cons

Boys' club mentality. Still insecure about historical reputation of company. Clueless, inexperienced management, confusing age with management skills. No expectation of employee growth or escalation.

  8. "Good exposure"

I have been working at USA Today as an intern

    Pros

If you ask around, it is really easy to get involved with more aspects of the company.

    Cons

Definite feeling that the company is in flux. A lot of people are leaving, the newsroom has somewhat of a tense vibe. Intern work time is minimal and it is imperative to the position to put yourself out there, because opportunity won't come to you.

I worked at USA Today as a contractor

    Pros

Overall my fellow colleagues were great, management never seemed to really breathe down anyones back. I liked the people and it was diverse

    Cons

Not seeing a long term future here and stagnating with my compensation rate.

    Advice to Management

    None
