I worked at USA Today as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

College program provided an excellent platform for a college journalist, and afforded a good bit of freedom to choose own stories and pursue them.

    Cons

While editors provided plenty of feedback, it often wasn't terribly constructive. There were both immediate editors who you worked with frequently, and copy editors who you rarely got a chance to interact with or learn from, making it hard to adapt to the company's style or learn what they preferred beyond simple trial and error.

    Advice to Management

Editors provided a lot of chances to pursue own stories, but that wasn't always a benefit as a college student still hoping to understand what issues the section's audience might be interested in. More direction might help students be more productive.
