I worked at USA Today full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Had the ability to really learn a lot about the sales world and process working with large scale agencies.

    Cons

So many bosses, kind of tedious day to day work.

    Advice to Management

It was an entry level position, it was, what it was. Helped me a lot in my long term career.

    Pros

Fast paced, print publication trying to integrate into digital world, fun and interesting creative/copy...

    Cons

Poor upper management, not involved in day-to-day

    Pros

Good People, Good money to be made based upon your own efforts and and the willingness to be flexable from management with unseen events that may disrupt weekly priorities.

    Cons

Circulation is decling rapidly and earnings are following suit. Layoffs and contract cancellations are excellerating. workloads are increasing while earning are declining.

    Advice to Management

Give more authority to the guy in the field to determin his/her draws and stop artificial intelligence (portal) from making these decisions. A lot of money is being lost from this system that also creates too much waste (in returns)

I worked at USA Today (More than 10 years)

    Pros

USA TODAY is still a very visible news brand, even though it has virtually disappeared from the hotel hallways it once ruled. Its website is competitive, and the technology you get to use is pretty good. Generally a decent bunch of people too. Beautiful HQ in McLean, Va., which is currently being renovated.

    Cons

It's a dying business, and despite numerous turnovers in top management there has never been the kind of innovation needed to bring in the dollars necessary to stave off a constant round of layoffs. 24/7/365 business that never sleeps, so burnout is high.

    Advice to Management

You're being outflanked by Quartz and other more nimble startups. Ditch your legacy print business and bring in people who understand the Internet for real.

I worked at USA Today full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

USA TODAY attracts very smart, hard-working employees who love journalism. Management in the newsroom used to be outstanding, and people really cared about each other and the product.

    Cons

The current management wants cheap labor instead of paying people a decent salary. Top managers get big bucks and bonuses while workers get paltry raises, if any. Working 10 to 12 hours a day is the norm in the newsroom. Veteran employees feel threatened by layoffs as they get older. Prospective employees should look elsewhere for a forward-thinking company that will treat them fairly and generously.

    Advice to Management

Rebuild the entire culture of the newsroom to what it once was.

    Pros

    -- Opportunity to write
-- Opportunity to interact with editors
-- Did get paid, but not much
-- Seminars to develop reporting skills

    Cons

-- Do not create opportunities for employment post graduation
-- Seems to be a cycle of interns so they can replace your writing

    Advice to Management

The biggest thing is to create more clear opportunities for employment post graduation. The brand has done a good job of coming into the digital age and is still making that push.

    Pros

Lots of responsibility, (based on abilities, not necessarily interests). Some forward-moving avenues / departments. Strong industry name. Casual work environment. Many good employees (but they don't necessarily stay long).

    Cons

Boys' club mentality. Still insecure about historical reputation of company. Clueless, inexperienced management, confusing age with management skills. No expectation of employee growth or escalation.

    Pros

Larry Kramer, Dave Calloway and Randy Kilgore were what was great. Larry and Randy are gone and Dave is likely not far behind.

    Cons

A brand that is no longer valued by advertisers. Leadership which is lost and out of touch. A challenged new company spun off. Horrible benefits. What more is there to say.

    Advice to Management

Get a clue. Get in touch with what's going on. Do over.

I worked at USA Today (More than 10 years)

    Pros

National brand that USED TO have strong employees

    Cons

Brand has completely lost its way thanks to inept management at USAT and Gannett. Once a proud place to work. Now a wasteland for other companies cast-offs.

    Advice to Management

Sell USA TODAY to someone who values it.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

When I started there, it was a great place to work. In the later years as the parent company, Gannett, took more control, it became a nightmare. Now USA Today is on the brink of extinction.

    Cons

Don't go to work for Gannett. To be a multi-media company, the management is filled with mean, clueless, untalented people.
