    Pros

Good co-workers, great building and exercise facility.

    Cons

Horrible executive management and no leadership or training. Working in a matrix is extremely frustrating and trying to get ideas and concepts approved is never ending.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect and value their opinion. Promote and reward those who do their job well and are proactive in taking initiative.

"Not as Robust as One Would Think - Especially in Circulation"

    Pros

A lot of good hard-working people that you would consider to be friends. Also, a free daily newspaper.

    Cons

The Circulation Department is marred with many old-time General Managers who continue to micromanage process and operate out of fear and paranoia thinking that they are being constantly watched by HQ. They seem to be more concerned about the perception of their respective market rather than generating results. They've all taken some kind of text book management training course that centers around asking their employees questions they already know the answer to. Processes and systems are archaic and when approached with an opportunity to improve functionality, the typical response is to back away for fear that it might cause attention.

    Advice to Management

Get your people out of the bubble and look beyond the four walls. Be less concerned about "perception is reality" and focus more on growing the business and developing your personnel.

I worked at USA Today full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice environment with nice people. No crazy sales people (rare for NYC). Great product and excellent pay

    Cons

Disconnect between marketing and their ideas for special pro gams to sell to clients. The presentations were too complicated and convoluted. Low energy and passion for the product.

    Advice to Management

Drill down the point of difference and communicate this more effectively with the sales team. Raise the passion factor more and eliminate all the stupid programs that marketing would present to the sales people to sell.

    Pros

Good opportunity to see the innovative products that the brand has to offer.

    Cons

There is so much to do but no room for growth. We've seen a high turn-over (voluntary and involuntary) over the past couple of years and it's disheartening to see some of talented people leave because of that. Employee benefits are also one of the top reasons why people choose to leave, especially young employees who look to build their careers, seek guidance and mentorship, and would appreciate great tuition assistance program when they look to earn a higher degree.

    Advice to Management

Ditch the politics and the old school, hierarchic process. If you invest in your employees, they will work harder for you. Management has to take the initiative to improve the quality of the employees' lives.

I worked at USA Today full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people I worked directly and indirectly with were top-notch, complete professionals and generally just good to work with. Most everyone is focused on providing the best possible product but pleasant in the process of accomplishing it.

    Cons

Staffing cuts have led to a general rise in the stress level and have hurt the product quality. More people are having to wear more hats, take on greater areas of responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Treat the people right, with respect and courtesy. They are your most valuable resource. They are not cogs to be worn down, tossed out and replaced.
