    I worked at USAA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Good wage and work at home is possible. Members are great for the most part, especially if you are former military yourself or military BRAT.

    Cons

    USAA has focused on up-selling their products way too much. As a member prior to employment I had a very high opinion of USAA and remember when you would call and your concern was handled quick, efficiently and correctly. Not the case anymore. Employees are made to focus on selling products not keying the work correctly or making sure everything is right ... that is just EXPECTED to happen and not the focus. ... Great idea in theory but doesn't work. When you reward employees for more products they sell and not the accuracy of their work ... well, what do you expect to happen???

    Advice to Management

    Go back to your roots USAA. Serve your members by focusing on REALLY empowering your employees to do the right thing .. because it's the right thing to do. Stop the up-selling of products ... your members trust you already and they will go to you if they need something. You lose trust by becoming a salesman instead of an adviser.

    Pros

    Great benefits and great people, working to help the military community. Everything you could think of available on campus so you never have to leave.

    Cons

    Very rigorous call center environment, if you’re not familiar with this it can take some getting used to. Constant micro-management.

    Amazing benefits-401k match of 8% dollar for dollar plus an additional 3%-9% given to you by the company. 18 weeks paid maternity leave for birth moms and 12 weeks for non birth parents starting 7/1/17. Free financial/insurance reviews on company time. Flexible work schedules and work at home positions. Opportunity for advancement. Beautiful workplace, awesome gym, discounted healthy food in cafeteria. On-site... childcare. Ethical company. Military-friendly. Holiday and annual bonuses. They do a LOT for their employees. I will never go anywhere else.

    Cons

    Dealing with coworkers they push through training even though they don't have what it takes to live up to USAA's customer service standards or they don't catch on fast enough-makes the rest of us look bad when we have to fix their mistakes.

    Advice to Management

    Don't be afraid to get rid of people in training who just don't cut it. It just creates more work for the rest of us and makes USAA look bad.

    End of the year bonus. Potlucks.

    Cons

    No opportunity for advancement. Micromanagement. Very hard to get days off

    Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers.

    Pros

    Really the only PROs were the Bonuses, extra PTO at the holidays, cafeteria had many selections, and the parking garage if you can find a spot when it snows.

    Cons

    In the call center, they run you into the ground with non stop, back to back phone calls. Unless you have a bachelor's degree, they only give you lateral promotions that don't give you a raise. Going into the retail banking dept you get paid lower than the insurance and if you transfer to insurance of auto circle you go through the grueling test to get to get licensed but then are never compensated for it. Things... might be better at the San Antonio location but in Colorado Springs you're a nobody and unless you kiss major butt you won't go anywhere with the company and be stuck on the phones forever. You try to trust management but they throw everything back in your face later and use as reasons why you're a bad employee. You definitely don't want to have a mind or your own and not drink their kool-aid otherwise you'll be marked as a difficult employee, even if you're just trying to give them suggestions on how to make the place better. I had 6 manager changes in 5 years working there. They also have no problem letting people go over anything, including for people with FMLA pending or on short term disability. They are not a flexible company unless you happen to get one of the nicer managers, which is a rarity.

    Advice to Management

    Be more flexible with your employees. Get them more times off the phones before the phone calls make their brains melt. Care more about your employees than kissing your boss' butt. Listen to your employees concerns and suggestions to actually make their lives better, which on turn will make the member experience better. Stop neglecting the retail banking. Everyone know insurance is the baby but unless it's the grand... opening of retail banking at branch they are totally an after thought.
