I worked at USDA Rural Development full-time

    Pros

There are definitely opportunities for growth up to a certain level and then you would hit a ceiling. Management and Employees really are driven to help those in the surrounding rural communities. Great work-life balance.

    Cons

There may be some outside of State offices they may be overlooked for promotions and somewhat slow to change overall.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to look at the unconventional candidate for potential. potential

Commute to D.C. can be tiresome if you live anywhere but in the district.

I have been working at USDA Rural Development full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Get to work with great people while helping rural towns, businesses and people. Every day is different. Wonderful work- life balance available with telework and flexible hours.

    Cons

Uncertain future due to changes in administrations and federal budget. Lots of bureaucracy and some remnants of "old boy network" mentality. Not nimble so slow to effect change.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the hard work and dedication of the employees in the field rather than continually focusing on those at State or National level.

I have been working at USDA Rural Development full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Diverse programs that provide assistance to rural communities. Teleworking is available as well as a flexible work and leave schedule.

    Cons

Because of the perpetual hiring freeze, as people retire or leave they are not replaced and their work is divided up among staff. I had better health care benefits when I was in the private sector. Budget cuts play havoc on any type of long-term planning.

    Advice to Management

Assessment of your staff is key. Finding out their strength and weaknesses will really help make the team stronger. Place employees in areas or programs where they will thrive.

I have been working at USDA Rural Development full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fairly secure job, better than average benefits, lots of time off, competitive salary

    Cons

Poor systems/processes for job responsibilities, typical government red tape (too many hands in the pie, hard to keep things moving in a timely manner), congressional budget mandates funding.....if there are difficulties passing a budget (which there are every year) possibility of a shutdown, or at minimum, very little funding to operate programs is received through the continuing resolution. This affects how much... money we have available, which affects how many loans we can fund, which is a measurement on our ratings/goals.......

I worked at USDA Rural Development full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Easy job. Most people enjoy what they do there. Offer better training for new employee's. Can move anywhere in the US since it's government. Ok Healthcare and time off.

    Cons

Not a lot of room to move up at local office. Most people are life employees when they get a f/t offer.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it simple!

I have been working at USDA Rural Development

    Pros

Job security and benefits. It's a federal job!

    Cons

Low morale and too many road blocks for moving up. Management is a joke and employees come and go and do as they please.

    Advice to Management

Make a better work environment. Hold employees accountable individually rather than giving out collective threats.

I have been working at USDA Rural Development

    Pros

Stable with good benefits and guaranteed raises if the position is worded that way when you accept the position. Telework is an option for most options.

    Cons

Can be a 'tech-phobic' culture. Also, as raises are tied into time rather than talent a lot of the more driven people may leave for other careers rather early.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to look beyond the credentials when hiring as a lot of the requirements for many of the positions are completely arbitrary. A person with an online Masters from a third-rate school is not worth more than a veteran with an Associates or a Bachelors.
