I worked at USG as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company is investing in leading edge technology.

    Cons

CTO brought in bright young people who have assumed manager and director positions. They may be bright but they lack experience and maturity. They treat consultants horribly, very condescending and will throw you under the bus if there are any issues.

    Advice to Management

Think before you hire bright young people. They don't know everything.

    Pros

    Clean and up to date

    Cons

However, the management was very poor in terms of delegating responsibility and task for when they would consistently leave without notice to either work in the Chicago location or to go on their vacation for the third time in a row.

    Advice to Management

Help new employees to get to know the other employees.

    Pros

Fair benefits, wonderful non-C suite people, great location, excellent work-life balance, nice office space. Opportunities to gain diverse experience early in career. Great place for early career development.

    Cons

C-Suite execs completely out of touch with the realities of the business. Empty suits playing businessman/woman. Linear thinkers who arrived at the top by riding the market growth wave. Don't stay past the 10 year mark - get your experience and move on. It is a very insular world. Advancement is not meritorious.

    Advice to Management

Check your ego at the door and stop bullying people. Everyone is afraid of you and therefore you don't get honest feedback. The perception is that you think you can do it all alone and don't need any input from your leadership teams. Look in the mirror and check your ego. Company performance under your tenure is underperforming the market. That's on you. Stop telling all of your employees about all of your vacation houses or that you bought your 16 year old a BMW or how much money you have! The expression "tone deaf" was written for you. You are getting rich on the backs of the people you bully all day long.

I worked at USG as a contractor

    Pros

Nice office, good location, good views, free coffee, nice cafeteria

    Cons

IT Management really doesn't seem to want to progress based on suggestions by contractors. They are more worried about your core hours than the work one can produce. Sad, really.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the contractors you hire. You hired them for their expertise and skills. They have been around the block and know a thing or two.

I worked at USG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of good hardworking people within the company.

    Cons

Downsizing through the years has prevented people from being able to advance. People who stuck with them through the tough times by taking on more work and not getting raises have not been appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Don't continue to count on employees sticking around and doing two or three peoples
who got laid off jobs. As jobs become available employees you take for granted will seek other employment. I worked with USG for over 15 years and being treated like that made me leave.
