I worked at USG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Strong legacy brand
    Convenient West Loop location
    Nice coworkers

    Cons

IT run very lean and it reflects very poorly upon the organization. Technologies and policies are mature and out of date. IT Security is a joke and recent implementations have been disasters. IT employees have been fired because of unclear and poorly communicated policies. There was an over reliance upon contractors.

    Advice to Management

It's understandable that you are conservative in a competitive industry, but you need to invest more in your people, process, and technology gaps or the company will lose out to nimble competitors. Recent stock performance reflects this.

I worked at USG full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great location, right across from the train station

    Cons

In IT, if you're not prepared to compromise your integrity, this is not the place for you. The phrase "if you can't get the job done, we'll find someone who can" is oft repeated, literally, word for word.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at USG full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees always help one another, safe, won't fire you for messing up product. Good place to stay if you wanted a long career

    Cons

Weekly swing shift, management will preach safety when everyone is around but always force production over safety, work life balance is nonexistent, management does not care about employees only dry wall

    Advice to Management

Stop the swing shift. Listen to your employees. And stop preaching safety if all you care about is productivity, we all can see through your lies

I have been working at USG full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Pay is pretty good
You get Benefits and vacation time

    Cons

Working hard gets you no where, promoted if your a good old boy or one of their sons, no place for women in plant supervisor positions or anywhere unless your happy being eye candy as the supervisors call it.

    Advice to Management

With a woman being promoted to take over for the retiring CEO, you would think respect for women would be a big part of the USG culture. Unfortunately that's not the case in the different plants. When they get hit with a sexual harassment/ discrimination lawsuit maybe this will finally change. Until then look forward to being treated like a 2ND rate citizen.

    Pros

The job pays good in benefits

    Cons

It's a company that is up in down so your hours can go from 60 to 36 hours do to lack of work

Management no that good they don't believe in listening to the employee

Benefits and pay are good, I think thats about it. Wish it could of worked out for us both but it didn't

    Cons

They are an unprofessional group as a whole, lead you on to thinking you had a position they full well knew was going to someone else.

    Advice to Management

Be professional, honest and up front

I worked at USG as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company is investing in leading edge technology.

    Cons

CTO brought in bright young people who have assumed manager and director positions. They may be bright but they lack experience and maturity. They treat consultants horribly, very condescending and will throw you under the bus if there are any issues.

    Advice to Management

Think before you hire bright young people. They don't know everything.

    Pros

    Clean and up to date

    Cons

However, the management was very poor in terms of delegating responsibility and task for when they would consistently leave without notice to either work in the Chicago location or to go on their vacation for the third time in a row.

    Advice to Management

Help new employees to get to know the other employees.
