    Pros

Outststanding people. Great work-life balance. Perfect location & office environment. Highest level of integrity.

    Cons

Waiting for housing market rebound. Career and comp on hold. People are pension locked and just waiting for retirement.

    Advice to Management

Don't wait for the market. Get serious about change. This is the new normal!

    Pros

Really nice office building. clean, comfortable, and contemporary work environment and work spaces. More than enough meeting rooms from large to small. Tons of natural light from full floor to ceiling windows. My first manager was excellent; he cared about my professional development and career, as well as my person life and well being.

    Cons

Some managers are much better than others. When I was laid off I was working for a manger that although micro managed, did not understand our teams day to day activities or how they impact the company. My manager also didn't want us thinking outside the confinements of the department.

    Advice to Management

Allow the workforce to critique their managers. Give opportunities outside of the employees direct area of work, especially if interest is shown.

    Pros

Great co-workers who turned out to be friends.
Relaxed atmosphere, we could always have fun even in a stressful environment.

    Cons

We were working a lot of Saturdays in a row.
    Hours were being cut back.
Threat of layoffs led to scared workers.

    Advice to Management

Try to bring back some of the fun that was there before.
Happier staff leads to better work and less turnover, I believe.

    Pros

work life balance is good, opportunity to advance early in career is great, pay good in middle US and South, but behind scale in NE and Calif, good people to work with

    Cons

lots of relocation to advance, corporate can be detached from field

    Advice to Management

Need to focus on streamlining all areas of organization, not just the field operations

    I worked at USG full-time

    Pros

The people and networking experiences made USG Corp great. If you put yourself out there, managers, directors, VP's, etc. are available to meet and discuss career goals, direction....even if you don't work in that department or business unit. When the housing market rebounds, USG environment should improve.

    Cons

Many layoffs and minimal (one) merit increases during the downturn. USG has a new strategy and the attitude of Sr. Mgmt is, "get on board or get out." Subsequently, individuals are hesistant to give an opinion or their thoughts on the new ideas. I believe HR is often inept and doesn't always have the back of the employees.

    Advice to Management

When business picks up for USG, reward the employees that stuck around. Get back to promoting from within and giving training opportunities for employees to move around.

I worked at USG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked with some of the best people ever in this company, free with knowledge sharing, professional in their fields, and tons of fun socially.

    Cons

They over-reacted to Sarbanes Oxley and locked the company down so tight with process that they squelched creativity. Micro-management abounds. The bad economy creates a tense atmosphere with annual layoffs.

    Advice to Management

You could get a lot more out of your employees if you let go of the reins.

    Pros

It offers a great work life balance.

    Cons

There is virtually no upward mobility.

    Advice to Management

The 'kiss-up-spit-down" practice backfires, so managers would be better off treating the staff with respect and courtesy.

    Pros

They don't throw out the baby with the bath water (so to speak). In other words, if a person doesn't work out in one position they will give them a chance in another provided that person shows the desire to work it out.

    Cons

Communication is one the biggest problems. Communication between corporate to corporate, field to field and corporate to field. This area needs a lot of work. Reviews are not done and raises are far and few between.

    Advice to Management

Communication should be better, reviews should be done on a regular basis and raises should be given on a minimum of an annual basis when the employee has shown to be valuable with a strong work ether, team player and produces time after time.
