An Excellent Choice of Employment for Students

      Pros

Working as a supervisor within University Recreations for UT Dallas has been a growing experience for me as student worker and taught me a fair amount of professional skills than I can transfer to future positions. Some of the major pros of working here are the interpersonal connections I made, it allowed me to expand upon my social and customer service skills as well. Additionally the hours I worked were created around my academic schedule as to avoid significant conflicts. The work environment is very friendly and all the staff are amicable towards each other and the patrons. The professional staff are connected closely with the student workers as well, and promotes a sense of camaraderie among all of us. Students will start out at staff, but the opportunity to become a supervisor is available to all once applications roll out.

      Cons

One of the cons include disrespectful patrons that do not adhere to the facilities policies and disregard staff and supervisor who check them on their behavior. Another downside is the potential lack of stimulation during quiet, non-busy shifts, so it is highly recommended that one brings a book to read or homework to work on after their assigned tasks for the shift are completed.

      Pros

      - Convenient since the peer tutoring center is located on the campus - Teaching helps keep you fresh in your subject, and other tutors are usually willing to help you out with questions in their field if they have downtime - Co-workers are all very personable (nearly a requirement to land the job) and you'll definitely make some friends in the workplace - No stress about not being able to answer a student's question as you can always pull in another co-worker for assistance - Very relaxed work environment - Absolutely fantastic boss - Usually very easy to get shifts covered

      Cons

      - Hours are capped. Weekly scheduled hours are capped at either 12 or 13 hours (can't quite remember which). You can cover the shifts of other people who teach your subject, but cannot exceed 19.5 total hours worked in the week.
