    Give and Take

Feb 24, 2015 - Senior Engineer, Materials/Structures in Chula Vista, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The pay per years of experience is good; the company is fairly stable for younger employees; we get a paid week off between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day that does not affect your vacation bank; San Diego is a great area to live in; there are a lot of options for specialization; the Employee Scholar Program will pay for any degree regardless of relevance to job function; a well-organized young professionals network; great opportunities for anyone looking to pursue a career in Ops, management, or Continuous Improvement; medical benefits are fine if you're young and single; tons of online training courses for familiarization on various topics

    Cons

Overtime is leaned on too heavily to accomplish goals instead of creating reasonable timelines from the outset and hiring the right staff for the job; senior leadership seems pretty out of touch with the ground-level employees; Continuous Improvement/ACE initiatives have become so excessive that they are counterproductive to efficiency; evaluation metrics are so broadly applied that a large portion are irrelevant to many work groups resulting in unnecessary busywork; unclear/limited career path for people wanting to pursue a technical/engineering career; it's difficult to take pride in your work when doing things the right way is so often overridden by getting something done quickly or just doing something "because that's what the customer wants"; limited options for medical benefits if you don't want an HSA

Challenging work decent pay handcuffed by outdated procedures

Oct 29, 2014 - Software Engineer in Minneapolis, MN

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

I am paid a fair amount and the work is challenging. They offer a full 100% tuition coverage (not reimbursement, they pay direct). The company is very large, so you can grow your network or find a New internal career path if so desired (although I have yet to change jobs internally). Various managers allow flex schedule and work remotely which is awesome. They give ample sick pay and also give a week of personal time (not vacation) to be used for errands that must be done during the day (e.g. banking)

    Cons

Rigid processes can make you hate it quickly. Near every purchase or actionable event is under scrutiny. They have a mythical gain share that seems to he rigged to fail but keep a recruiting promise. Raises are extremely low and do not keep up with the market. Vacation package is small (2 week's until 5 years) but it balances with the other time off (sick and personal time). A lot of off shoring is taking place which means working with foreign teams that may have much lower standards for work quality. The push to offshore comes from upper management so going to lower management informing them of the gap is moot.

Not the way things should be run.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Ongoing continuing education money is the best benefit in this company. Friendly co-workers. Onsite work out facilities.

    Cons

This past year has been a challenge to say the least. Several lay offs, downsizing. Absolute abysmal health insurance with all options being high deductible and lowest high deductible is $3200 per family, dental insurance requiring employee to pay 100% of the premium, furloughs and pay cuts announced via email, not from your supervisor, poor employee morale, no heat turned on in building when it is 48 degrees outside, requiring employees to fly coach on an 8 hour overseas trip, no holiday party or bonus, no recognition for a job well done. I fully expect that I will have to bring in my own toilet paper, kleenex and space heater next. (I shouldn't be giving them ideas) Good grief.

Good people, no room to maneuver.

Sep 17, 2014 - Systems Engineering in Danbury, CT

    Pros

Lots of people have been there since the building was Perkin Elmer, and they'll tell you all about its history. The work that's been done in the building has been extremely important to the United States and it has a well-deserved reputation. My department was run well and all the supervisors were hard workers and aware of everything that was happening under their noses.

    Cons

I came in with a substantial amount of technical knowledge and experience with satellite electronics, and yet I've been pigeonholed into glorified document control. I don't get to use any of my lab experience or integration and test acumen unless I kick in someone's door and there's literally no one else available to do the job. The "organizational goals" of UTC involve people staying within strict lane lines concerning their job description and stepping no further. There's zero upward mobility. Neither I nor anyone on my team will ever get promoted while at UTC. When higher-ups depart, change departments, or retire, outsiders are brought in or the organizational chart is reworked so that the remaining heads get more underlings, thus exacerbating the already prevalent problem of overdrawing our resources. Since I was hired at UTC, I've learned absolutely nothing except procedures unique to UTC protocols. That's it. It's very, very difficult to be given work that requires learning to do.
