    Terrible Company

Apr 28, 2014 - Finance Manager in Chula Vista, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

When it was Goodrich, one of the best companies to work for in the US. Great culture, great working environment, great people

    Cons

Under UTC Leadership morale is constantly low, ridiculous demands, requests for the same information in ten different formats for ten different layers of management, requests for information that are never used, no regard for employees morale, extremely excessive layers of management, if you reach certain level you are expected to work 24/7, short term thinking, refusal to hire more employees to keep down cost, employees overloaded with work, the supposed culture preached by management is basically non-existent, no long term strategy for company, each company acquired by UTC is run to the ground until they purchase another cash cow, the first way to cut cost is to layoff employees, excessive reporting (managers and above spend most of their time preparing for presentations and reports instead of focusing on the business), etc If you work in Finance, expect to work non-stop and be hounded for requests every day of the week including weekends. You will have no life. Also expect to be around unhappy coworkers. The only way UTC is still profitable is because they purchase a new company every few years. The companies they purchase, they run them into the ground and count on their new cash cow to compensate for their other failing businesses.

Former Intern, less than 1 year

    Summer Intern

Dec 15, 2015 - Program Management Intern in Albuquerque, NM

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Had a generally positive time while interning. The people I worked with all were very helpful and polite. My managers all seemed very happy to have me around and get me exposed to program management. Most people in the office were willing to help.

    Cons

Coming from an engineering background I felt other internships had a better idea of what I should be doing as an intern but this experience wasn't like that. It was hard for me to find a set task most of the time. Although, my managers were happy to have me it seemed like others didn't see much value in interns. A big thing with this site was that it recently (2-3 yrs) was bought by UTC so there was half a culture of standardization and strictly by the book and the other half had a more "tradition" attitude. The biggest divider between these two groups seemed more to be each didn't wanna see the others perspective.

    Fear driven culture

Jan 11, 2016 - Program Manager in Rockford, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

You can learn a lot IF you are on the right team. You will be given large tasks, so can learn a lot. Employee education benefits are solid, after a year. Salaries and benefits negotiated before hire can be solid. Older/experienced employees are excellent.

    Cons

Training is very minimal and catch as catch can. Trial by fire. There are early retirements, layoffs and more early retirements. Benefits are decreasing. Many great experienced staff are either leaving or being let go (they cost more than the newbies). Quality is decreasing. Atmosphere right now is of open fear. Very top heavy right now.

  8. 4.0
Current Employee, more than 5 years

    Pros

UTC's education reimbursement plan is one of the best in the corporate wold. The salaries can be competitive IF negotiated upon hiring in. There are many advancement opportunities across the massive corporation if you interview well and are educated/experienced.

    Cons

Annual merit increases are at inflation at best. It is difficult to stay motivated when resources are constraigned and it's a struggle to sucseed. Further demoralizing can be when peers are not held accountable during challenging times. As a result, hard workers are worked far too hard and slackers just float along unscathed.

    Great People & Products but

Mar 28, 2018 - Manager in Minneapolis, MN
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

There's a sense of community among managers and I've never worked someplace where generally people go out of their way to help one another with whatever they're working on. Another thing that strikes me is that if I identify a project I want to work on to grow the business or improve some aspect of how we go to market, my manager helps me to make it happen. I've been fortunate to have great direct support in my role.

    Cons

From an organizational perspective, there's a lack of leadership but plenty of people with VP titles. How this plays out culturally is plenty of structure but an inability to put the customer first and a lack of urgency in solving problems. From a tools perspective, the rank and file lack the proper IT-related tools to do their jobs as security reviews drag on for years.

    Buyer beware

Apr 1, 2017 - Engineering Manager in Minneapolis, MN
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Typical very large company, deep pockets, employees are generally good people and care about success. Good for entry level and early experience employees to build a resume.

    Cons

Culture is broken - complete lack of trust, micromanagement from all levels of leadership, dictatorial command structure, large amounts of red tape associated with need for approvals for everything up to the highest levels of leadership. Belief in a one size fits all business model which severely restricts more agile businesses, products, or markets.

    Manager

Feb 4, 2016 - Manager in Charlotte, NC
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

UTAS has all the benefits of a large company - insurance, 401K, vacation days... but that's where it stops... not to say aren't great people working there, trying to get something done!

    Cons

UTAS need to lean out their processes, reduce the bureaucracy, and allow for people to get useful work done. There is an overpowering emphasis on not spending, not taking chances, not looking past the next delivery. The business strategy is all about survival and hitting the quarterly numbers... at the cost of long term strategic vision
