UTC Aerospace Systems is not an employer to work for

    Oct 20, 2014 - Manufacturing Engineer

    Pros

Interesting technology and the older work force is dedicated and knowledgable

    Cons

I worked at Hamilton Standard then Sundstrand Including the merger with Goodrich. The merger is said to be a success but it is not. Goodrich was a better managed company with a family atmosphere that UTC eliminated. There is in fighting because you can only have so much management after a merger and it is a dog eat dog culture. The UTC pension plan is eliminated, most of the manufacturing moved oversee's, the hourly work force is disrespected and minimized, new leadership put in place is clueless and the salary work force has been reduced to a point where unpaid overtime is expected. Moral is poor and experienced workers are retiring or leaving. Interns like it because they are exposed to aerospace technology and given lots of responsibility. Then once they have been there awhile and realize promotions are political not based on merit and work life balance is poor they leave. To top it off HR is in the pocket of management and never follows through on complaints.

Constant re-organization, top down management, stifling young engineers

Nov 12, 2018 - Manufacturing Engineer in Burnsville, MN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great opportunities to learn many different products and work with many different aerospace customers like Airbus, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing. Awesome individual contributors who are very knowledgeable - senior engineers, technicians, builders, test systems, etc. Lots of opportunity to switch areas within the facility. Very cool products! Low-level managers are really great for engineering teams and typically protect their team members well. Lots of complex and interesting problems to work on.

    Cons

Management creates conflicting priorities and works at the wrong level in certain areas. Re-organizations are not thought through and can leave individuals isolated or overworked. The company does not do a great job supporting young engineers and do not train you in the basic ERP and MES systems we use everyday. Old run down equipment that keeps getting repaired rather than upgraded. Limited capital investment each year that is consumed by one area of the facility.

    Manufacturing Engineer

    Mar 7, 2014 - Manufacturing Engineer

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Opportunity to work on projects that have life-saving capabilities. The people that truly know their job and love what they do are what is keeping the company afloat.

    Cons

No one is willing to admit when they make a mistake. It always comes down to the finger pointing game and trying to throw the newest team member under the bus. The only way to get an opportunity to move up is to have dirt on someone in management, know someone in the corporate office, or the person above you really messed up (and didn't take you down with them!). Way to many unqualified people in strategic and important key roles who have absolutely no idea what their job function is, let alone how to effective at it.

I worked at UTC aerospace systems for 3 years.

Mar 12, 2019 - Senior Manufacturing Engineer in Fairfield, CA

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The job provided a wide range of opportunities to test your mechanical engineering skills and knowledge. The days went by quickly and were busy working on the production floor and with desk work. There was lots of opportunity to explore new jobs at the site even in different departments.

    Cons

The leadership team at the site had 100% turnover in my 3 years there. There were 3 different site leads. I had 5 different supervisors while in the same position in my time there. It can make expectations and priorities unclear at times.

    Neutral company, great benefit

    Pros

Top company in fortune 500 Great Employee benefits Competitive Salary

    Cons

Full of older folks who are just waiting for retirement. Find a lot of people spend half of the day talking rather than working. A lot of politics throughout the site. Occasionally I find this company hire way to many people to do one job.

    Pros

They have a good approach to helping employees to learn and grow. Old philosophy from when they were Goodrich. Lots of room to grow in any area. Overtime pay is available to associate engineers.

    Cons

Phasing out lots of old Goodrich philosophies and mindsets. Feels more like a giant global conglomerate than just a local shop with good people.

    Pros

People I worked with were nice. The pay was good fro the area I was in especially

    Cons

Upper management wasn't able to provide the proper engineering staff which overloaded the engineer and engineering techs that were supposed to help me learn. This made it difficult for me to be coached or mentored and ultimately required you to find work to keep yourself busy.

Learned many things about the manufacturing environment while on a co-op.

Aug 6, 2014 - Manufacturing Engineer Co-Op in Bismarck, ND
    Recommend

    Pros

Allowed to manage my own work schedule. The other employees there were very friendly. The pay was very fair. I was given plenty of projects to work on, and given a few bigger responsibilities.

    Cons

Was hired through a third-party so I did not receive the same benefits as most people working there. This wasn't a big problem since I was just there for 8 months.
