2% Pay Cuts in 2016 - All UTC Aerospace Salaried Emps

Oct 7, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Chula Vista, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The Scholarship program is available to all employees which is a plus. Good internship program. The Cafeteria on site has a variety of foods to pick from.

    Cons

Too many layoffs the last couple years of long term knowledgeable employees. Expected to meet business goals without enough resources. Work/life balance is not possible at this time. Everyone is reacting to urgent needs to meet schedules/deliveries daily. Moral is low and now all the hard working employees will have 2% of their base pay reduced starting in Jan. 2016 for a year.

Good place to learn advanced composites.

    Pros

Good place to gain experience with advancef composites. Plenty of work to do. Some great employees like management types, engineers and various technicians. Current market outlook positive for the next decade in some programs.

    Cons

Union shop which means low performers who have overstayed their welcome by a decade or more and get top pay. Atrition should kick in three to five years though. Also decent benefits if you are union but expensive if you're not.

    Pros

Paid education options, Company says good things about values but very little translates to the employee

    Cons

401 K is terrible, Always pushing for more results while taking away resources. Leadership is not focused on team work and employees. No work life balance. Pay raises and bonus are reserved for the upper ranks

great place for new graduates, maybe not to most competitive salaries

    Pros

The Employee Scholar Program pays for any one degree you want to seek, regardless of whether it relates to your current job. Max limit for Master's is $60k for the degree and $15/year. UTC covers everything: tuition, books, exam fees, etc. Another unique aspect of UTC's Employee Scholar Program is that there is no obligation to continue working at UTC after you get your degree. A lot of companies make you work there a couple years minimum after graduating, or else you have to repay the company for the degree. Not at UTC. And UTC you're free to move on. Also, UTC's Associate Engineering Rotation Program seems like an awesome way for new graduates to get introduced to the professional engineering. The associate engineers (new grads) are full-time employees who rotated through several different engineering groups over the course of one year. They get a broad exposure to the different aspects of engineering in the business before they're finally assigned to one role (the company makes and attempt to satisfy preferences). Basically, it's a great place to work to get some initial experience just after, or not long after college. Another thing I like about UTC is that it has a global (commercial) customer base. This means the work is more steady over a few years than other companies which rely more heavily on volitile U.S. Government contracts and military spending. It also means that we get to interact with customers and suppliers from all over the world, which I enjoy. As a result our UTC workforce is also very culturally diverse and multilingual.

    Cons

UTC seems to be pretty cheap on most other things. They're always trying to squeeze more out of us engineers while gradually reducing our benefits. UTC claims to pay us a median salary: not the highest but not the lowest. However, after googling around on some of the aggregate websites, I think we're paid less than average for the industry, which is why I'm signing up for Glassdoor! The high-deductible health care plan could leave you in debt $13,000 every year, worst-case scenario. UTC keeps laying people off (firing) to meet budget even though there is still lots of work to be done. Since UTC acquired our business, literally every single group in the company has been complaining about being understaffed. The result is that the customers become irate that everything is late, then we're expected to pick up the slack. We're only offered incentive (regular rate) extra pay for extra hours after we basically refuse to donate our personal life to getting the work done. Then UTC goes into panic mode and tries to bring on temporary contractors or inexperienced associates to get things done faster, which only slows us down trying to get these newbies up to speed. It makes for a very stressful place to work, even more so for the middle management who are responsible for delivery dates. I have one project managers and three to five other managers in different groups which I constantly have to status. It'd be nice if we could trade one of those for another guy to get the engineering done. Every year for the last 3 years UTC has reduced our annual bonus maximum percentage by half. Also, we know that sister companies under UTC like Pratt & Whitney have suffered from furloughs (forced, unpaid leave), which is basically a salary cut. And the other UTC companies don't get any annual bonus, so we fear that's in our future as well.

    Pros

Good pay and you don’t even have to work for it. Endless sick pay, dependent care, parental leave and all kinds of PAID time off!!

    Cons

Upper management is clueless and all smoke and mirrors. Say anything to satisfy Wall Street in order to line their pockets.

    Great Internship Experience

May 15, 2019 - Program Office Cost Reduction in Windsor Locks, CT

    Pros

Super organized company that allowed you to stay on track each day learning new things, meeting new people, and really helping you gain experience to help you progress in the future. Pay is well for an intern and take advantage of offered tours of facilities and having a peer mentor.

    Cons

Upper management that I worked with did not help me obtain a position within the company at all knowing that I was going to be a senior and graduating that year. I was an Engineer doing/cost reduction and not engineering.

Avoid, unless it's a stepping stone to something better

May 14, 2016 - Senior Software Engineer in Westford, MA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Interesting and relevant work, but this is location-specific. Good coworkers and colleagues. Great work-life balance: 40 hour work weeks and done. Some flexibility in the ability to work remote or adjust working hours, depending on your current assignments. The education and training benefits are the best I've ever seen (pays up-front for degree programs and sufficient training budget for other seminars, courses, and conferences).

    Cons

Poorly managed and maintained IT infrastructure with outsource IT support. Management doesn't make an attempt to understand the knowledge and skills of employees and doesn't assign them to work that takes advantage of their knowledge, skills, and experience. Functional managers and higher don't embrace the written words of the company's values. Extremely poor benefits, unless you are young and healthy. Low pay, especially for the geographic region
