    Sick Atmosphere

    Pros

Good place to start and decent salary

    Cons

You can cut the tension with a knife. it's all about protecting your butt . unsupportive and demanding management. Lower level leadership are part of the game to put pressure on the individuals to produce more and more with less time. you are required to work 50 hours minimum and no overtime pay. The have completely cut off the traveling, but at the same time you should resolve every problem. Quality and ethics are a sells pitch with upper management. your voice is only required to further the management agenda; if you point out issues, you are not a team player. New upper management from Hamilton Sundstrand will cut your throat in a second

great place for new graduates, maybe not to most competitive salaries

Sep 26, 2015 - Senior Mechanical Engineer in Chula Vista, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The Employee Scholar Program pays for any one degree you want to seek, regardless of whether it relates to your current job. Max limit for Master's is $60k for the degree and $15/year. UTC covers everything: tuition, books, exam fees, etc. Another unique aspect of UTC's Employee Scholar Program is that there is no obligation to continue working at UTC after you get your degree. A lot of companies make you work there a couple years minimum after graduating, or else you have to repay the company for the degree. Not at UTC. And UTC you're free to move on. Also, UTC's Associate Engineering Rotation Program seems like an awesome way for new graduates to get introduced to the professional engineering. The associate engineers (new grads) are full-time employees who rotated through several different engineering groups over the course of one year. They get a broad exposure to the different aspects of engineering in the business before they're finally assigned to one role (the company makes and attempt to satisfy preferences). Basically, it's a great place to work to get some initial experience just after, or not long after college. Another thing I like about UTC is that it has a global (commercial) customer base. This means the work is more steady over a few years than other companies which rely more heavily on volitile U.S. Government contracts and military spending. It also means that we get to interact with customers and suppliers from all over the world, which I enjoy. As a result our UTC workforce is also very culturally diverse and multilingual.

    Cons

UTC seems to be pretty cheap on most other things. They're always trying to squeeze more out of us engineers while gradually reducing our benefits. UTC claims to pay us a median salary: not the highest but not the lowest. However, after googling around on some of the aggregate websites, I think we're paid less than average for the industry, which is why I'm signing up for Glassdoor! The high-deductible health care plan could leave you in debt $13,000 every year, worst-case scenario. UTC keeps laying people off (firing) to meet budget even though there is still lots of work to be done. Since UTC acquired our business, literally every single group in the company has been complaining about being understaffed. The result is that the customers become irate that everything is late, then we're expected to pick up the slack. We're only offered incentive (regular rate) extra pay for extra hours after we basically refuse to donate our personal life to getting the work done. Then UTC goes into panic mode and tries to bring on temporary contractors or inexperienced associates to get things done faster, which only slows us down trying to get these newbies up to speed. It makes for a very stressful place to work, even more so for the middle management who are responsible for delivery dates. I have one project managers and three to five other managers in different groups which I constantly have to status. It'd be nice if we could trade one of those for another guy to get the engineering done. Every year for the last 3 years UTC has reduced our annual bonus maximum percentage by half. Also, we know that sister companies under UTC like Pratt & Whitney have suffered from furloughs (forced, unpaid leave), which is basically a salary cut. And the other UTC companies don't get any annual bonus, so we fear that's in our future as well.

    Great company to work for

    Sep 3, 2015 - Anonymous Employee

    Business Outlook

    Pros

This company gives you the best opportunity and incentive to go back to school while you work for them. Because of the economy downturn from 2008-2010 the budget was cut back but even at a limited budget the benefit and rewards were still much better than any big companies out there. This is a huge company so if you want to move around, you have multiple UTC companies to work for and many experts to learn from. The pay for their engineers were competitive. At least I had no problem with my salaries. Although staying in the same position might not make as much as moving around... even within the company. The management team there knows what they were doing so everyone treated each other with lots of respect and guidance when needed. They can be flexible with work hours depending on each person's situation.

    Cons

Because the company is so big, moving up is not going to be as fast or easy as smaller companies with lots of growth. A lot of mid managers end up staying in their job for a while and there's no hurry to create new titles. Also yearly salary increase might not be as good as other smaller & growing companies. The company is in the huge ACE/Lean movement. It could be a negative experience for some people who don't see the benefit of it.

    Good Salary, Bad Environment

Aug 13, 2013 - Engineer in Vergennes, VT
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The salaries offered by the organization are at least competitive and in many cases above average.

    Cons

UTC in general uses furloughs as a method of cutting costs. The well being of the employees is last on the list of concerns for management. Programs here have staff removed and then management institutes mandatory overtime for remaining team members. Management does not follow through on promises for opportunities to grow your career. In general, they commit to providing employees with new work and training opportunities and when called to make good on those offers, they don't. In good conscience, I cannot recommend that a young engineer begin his or her career here.

Do not work for Wheels and Brakes!

Oct 8, 2014 - Inspector in Dallas, TX

    Business Outlook

    Pros

UTC as a company has awesome benefits and they do care about progress outside of wheels and brakes. The employee scholar program is the best I have seen within any business. A endless amount of employee discounts are given. They are a true leader when it comes to aviation and aerospace industry.

    Cons

The Wheels and Brakes division is a horrible subsidiarity to work for! There is a big disconnect between upper management, shop management and employees. There is always a bad vibe around all the wheels and brake shops due to the lack employee engagement with management and corporate. The corporate level will do as they please and can careless about the employees working on the shop floor. You are more of a number than a person! Wheels and brakes Human Resource department is also horrible. They will lie to your face just to tell you what you want to hear. The yearly merit is a joke for all shop employees. There is a reason why employees aren't happy when you work so much overtime and put so much of your life into the company and still get a .50 cent raise! Employees can progress in the shop but to receive a salary adjustment could take up to months and with no back pay. HR will tell you that its only given out during the yearly merit. It all depends on who's butt the employee is kissing to move up or to get multiple salary adjustments a year.
