    Happiness depends on position

May 28, 2014 - Senior Engineer in Windsor Locks, CT
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

UTC employee scholar program (used to be better when they had no cap on amt of degrees and annual expense cap) they now only cover 1 degree of each level (Bachelors, Masters, PHD) and a max of 15k a year. Lots of employee engagement groups in homebase like Windsor Locks, CT Job can be laid back or can be job from hell depending on the position and what program you are working.

    Cons

I have friends that work for certain programs and work a minimum of 50-60 hrs a week and weekends... so choose a position carefully if work/life balance is important to you. There are some positions in certain programs that have great work/life balance and flexibility...its just about finding the right one. No trust for upper management it feels Salary is not competive once you have been with the company for a long time, yearly raises suck (2-3% is the avg) so make sure you negotiate your salary coming in.

    Sick Atmosphere

Sep 18, 2015 - Procurement in Chula Vista, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good place to start and decent salary

    Cons

You can cut the tension with a knife. it's all about protecting your butt . unsupportive and demanding management. Lower level leadership are part of the game to put pressure on the individuals to produce more and more with less time. you are required to work 50 hours minimum and no overtime pay. The have completely cut off the traveling, but at the same time you should resolve every problem. Quality and ethics are a sells pitch with upper management. your voice is only required to further the management agenda; if you point out issues, you are not a team player. New upper management from Hamilton Sundstrand will cut your throat in a second

    Pros

-Many engineering opportunities. -Lots of very knowledgeable engineers. -Flexible work hours. Overall, UTC is not a bad place to work. They offer a good amount of opportunities for many different kinds of engineers.

    Cons

-Upper management is too intrusive. -Human resources are not very efficient. -Like to overcomplicate the most simple of tasks. -They like to force their political views on all employees.

    Pros

Decent education reimbursement program still exists

    Cons

Excessive levels of mid and upper level management. Way too many chiefs vs. indians which has historically been their trademark. Recent merger with Goodrich has company floundering with best management practices and implementation of new company wide SAP operating system. Company is managed for short term gains only with sole focus being on year end stock price. No long term investments are evident for long term well being of the company.

More bureaucracy than the government and not given the tools to do your job

    Jan 31, 2018 - Operations Manager
    Recommend

    Pros

Good pay and you don’t even have to work for it. Endless sick pay, dependent care, parental leave and all kinds of PAID time off!!

    Cons

Upper management is clueless and all smoke and mirrors. Say anything to satisfy Wall Street in order to line their pockets.

    Great People, Old School Mentality

Oct 24, 2016 - Senior Systems Engineer in Hartford, CT
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

All the engineers are extremely competent people to work with, and there are educational benefits that dwarf any other large company

    Cons

The company really wants to innovate but that are too many in middle and upper management that are change/risk averse

Good place, good pay and good people.

Oct 30, 2014 - Engineering Co-Op in Windsor Locks, CT

    Pros

Pay, health benefits, shareholder benefits, feel as if you're a part of the company. Friendly atmosphere and great work life balance. Upper management is very understanding and works with you. You're not given any grunt work. Company values hard work and effort, but respect's the individual which creates a really fantastic work atmostphere and work life balance.

    Cons

Lots of job turnovers, a few inefficiencies when trying to get your work done. Most people aren't too technically sound due knowledge gap - I am a very tech based. Older employee base - not many young people currently working at Windsor Locks - I am in my early 20's.

Challenging work decent pay handcuffed by outdated procedures

Oct 29, 2014 - Software Engineer in Minneapolis, MN
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

I am paid a fair amount and the work is challenging. They offer a full 100% tuition coverage (not reimbursement, they pay direct). The company is very large, so you can grow your network or find a New internal career path if so desired (although I have yet to change jobs internally). Various managers allow flex schedule and work remotely which is awesome. They give ample sick pay and also give a week of personal time (not vacation) to be used for errands that must be done during the day (e.g. banking)

    Cons

Rigid processes can make you hate it quickly. Near every purchase or actionable event is under scrutiny. They have a mythical gain share that seems to he rigged to fail but keep a recruiting promise. Raises are extremely low and do not keep up with the market. Vacation package is small (2 week's until 5 years) but it balances with the other time off (sick and personal time). A lot of off shoring is taking place which means working with foreign teams that may have much lower standards for work quality. The push to offshore comes from upper management so going to lower management informing them of the gap is moot.
