I have been working at UW Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Exposure to all levels of the organization. Adept colleagues engaged in the mission of the organization.

    Cons

Restructuring after multiple organisation merger and the start of a new CEO. Leadership and strategic vision ambiguity. But this too shall pass.

    Advice to Management

Complete and communicate the strategic plan.
Organisation is top heavy - stop creating director positions.

I worked at UW Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nothing that comes to mind. UW has a good football team. Best place for management training if you have no formal education, B.S. Or M.S..

    Cons

Management is probably the worst in the industry. Incompetinent CIO and all her crew. With the new CEO nothing has changed, that should tell one what a state institution is all about.

    Advice to Management

To be frank advise won't do much. Avoid working for governmental institutes. Private sector is where innovation is.

I worked at UW Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. I don't have anything else that's good that still applies these days

    Cons

Treat non medical employees like expendable trash. No reputable direction in their food service operations

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive pay, clean environment, cafeteria options, constant coffee (with donation).

    Cons

No training, leadership are friends first, leadership not organized and changes mind all the time, my specific leader was rude and condescending to staff who was under them as well as other teams, high turnover

    Advice to Management

Business first, if your employees are leaving for whatever reason and are not being successful please look at the person you chose to be in charge.

I have been working at UW Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, free parking (dependent upon location), great group of co-workers, somewhat flexible hours.

    Cons

Management. There is way too much management, and depending upon who you report to, your experience working for UW can be great or terrible - there really is no in between. I spent far too long working for awful management, and no matter how much proof and documentation of harassment you give to HR or to your managers' superior, NOTHING changes. I am lucky to work for an excellent manager now who is very much involved with his team and forming a strong community.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Look at how high the turnover is and fix the problem.

I have been working at UW Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, employee learning and development opportunities, culture of research and teaching, specialty nationally renowned doctors

    Cons

Parking and fees, non-competitive salaries or wages (especially for non-RN positions) and HR department in general, outdated facilities, too many committees without clear direction- takes forever to get a decision made

    Advice to Management

Market review of wages to stay competitive, reduce turnover and fill vacancies. Evaluate senior leadership structure- too top heavy and not enough front line employees to do what is most important- take care of patients.

I have been working at UW Health part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Health benefits are very good, Wisconsin state pension available, regular pay increases (I have increased $1/hr in the first year), supportive management, paid time off, tuition reimbursement for select programs, opportunities to learn at work.

    Cons

Sometimes I feel like my experience and education isn't valued, especially by the doctors and nurses I work with. Overall, they're nice people, but sometimes I feel like I'll always just be a grunt to them.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at UW Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are pretty good. Often times promotions come from within.

    Cons

Recently raised cost for several things. Gave employees a raise to offset the costs. Their idea of offsetting the cost is 6000 dollars less in my pocket after another year of good hard work. Not too many people are happy with that. Salaries don't match up to competition in the area and good employees are dropping like flies

    Advice to Management

It shouldn't take 2 years to figure out that wages are not competitive with other hospitals in the area. Your staff feels as if they're being nickel and dimed. Take a look at the staff at the uw not as many smiling faces as you were used to seeing. Have everyone take a survey and ask questions about pay, and how we are talked down to by management and o.r. staff. And if it is really worth it.
