    Positive Outlook

I worked at Ulster County New York as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff was very helpful in teaching new task and how the business world and the political world worked. Able to work with the general public in a number of aspects.

    Cons

Everyone one only worries about their job based on a civil service description which isn't a bad thing but sometimes helping each other out would be a bad thing.

    Advice to Management

Don't have favor-its and listen to everyone's ideas. Saying thank you and showing appreciation goes a long way!

I worked at Ulster County New York (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay is far higher than the county average for similar positions. The parking lot was full of luxury cars.

    Cons

I really enjoyed my work here and found it very fulfilling, but the environment was very unprofessional here. There were many reports of employees who had other jobs during the day and were paid for full-time work here at the same time. They were typically "protected" by someone in the system. Ethics abuses were well-known by insiders and people in the community. Senior-level staffers paid into the campaign coffers (as must be reported by campaign finance law) of the County Executive before starting their jobs. Harassment occurred and could not be reported to the personnel office -- people were afraid of retaliation for making such reports. It was clear that people were fired for questioning this entire system.

    Advice to Management

It is such a shame that government is run this way. It is no wonder people don't trust you!

I worked at Ulster County New York as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

As part of the summer internship program offered by the local government of Ulster County, I was involved in a variety of activities, ranging from more menial tasks like data entry to more engaging ones like event planning and marketing.

    Cons

Overall, the pros greatly outweigh the cons, but if I were able to make changes to the program, I would have added more of an emphasis on the marketing and even planning opportunities.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!
