Laid back, not for long term and not enough recognition/promotion received for those who deserve it
Feb 7, 2011 - Prestige ConsultantRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-Ulta is a laid back place to work at and there's not too much pressure on the employees -They are able to work around your schedule -It's a fun environment and I love the dept I work for which is selling high end cosmetics - the employee discount is pretty decent (25%) and it increases on employee appreciation days which come about 2-3 times a yr to 35-40%
Cons
-Ulta is not really a place for advancement and recognition is not received enough -Unfair promoting -The hours are the number one con because they are very little. They don't want to pay benefits so they hardly have any full time positions. If you want to work FT at Ulta you either have to be a manager or hair stylist/esthetician. FT there is 30+ hrs. I've worked there for a long time and I am an excellent employee and receive recognition for it and have seniority but that does not matter because they still won't have anything to offer. They just hire new employees and decrease everyone's hours.

Pros
Employee discount was great; planograms were east to follow; within a week I learned 80% of the store inventory.
Cons
BOPIS and the handheld device in general was laggy at times (caused frustration from customers); there was pressure to sign up customers for credit card even when they clearly weren’t comfortable doing so.

Pros
The discounts are good. People are nice and the job itself is s really good place to start in the beauty industry
Cons
Some managers can be rude and you can't use ulta couple plus your employee discount.

District Manager

Great Retail Format, Merchants buy lots of new products with a strong mix of Mass and Prestige items. Salon and service menu is a wide range of services.
Cons
Upper management claims but does not listen to employees, this is a very operational company who likes to ' look good' for the investors and wall street but are out of touch with their stores. Guest engagement is not a priority if you do not staff your stores. Upper Management is from Discount Retailer's and want employees to spend 60% of their time in operations mode. The Beauty Guest needs time to spend with a Salesperson especially in a store that is downright confusing to the average consumer. Salon business does not cater to all Guests. A lot left on the table. All talk from upper Management, Go to your stores they are a mess!

Ulta SEARCHES & CONFISCATES Employees’ Property.
Oct 16, 2022 - Sales Associate in Los Angeles, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You get small discounts on products. You can buy items on sale, though you will be required to wait until most of the sale day is over. You might get a small product once a quarter if sales were decent for the store.
Cons
Any makeup you bring with you that can’t prove you already payed for is CONFISCATED from you, Ulta automatically assumes you stole it. This was a big shock to me. You are searched for stolen products at the end of every shift by management. Wages are so low that you can hardly afford to buy anything even with the employee discount. Management hires you and then promptly ignores the availability you gave them, if you refuse to work 6am shifts unloading trucks, management retaliates by cutting your hours. You are required to buy your own formal business outfits, including uncomfortable dress shoes. Comfortable sneakers, even in the correct range of colors you’re allowed to wear, are banned despite entire shifts spent walking and standing on concrete floors. Micromanagement of your sales performance, this is not a ‘fun’ job where you get to help customers with your love and knowledge of makeup. Ulta pushes you to obnoxiously upsell their store credit card, but there are no real incentives or bonuses for the employees when a customer does sign up for the card. In my 10+ years of retail, I’ve found businesses usually have some sort of incentive for the employees, so this was an unpleasant surprise. You are told that you’ll get free products to try, even makeup that hasn’t been officially released yet. In reality, once a quarter, if sales were good, you might get some tiny generic lipgloss and a pat on the back.

Pros
The employee is discount is great and there are a lot opportunities for free products.
Cons
Management is really bad and opportunities to move up are non-existent. Pay is dismal and the hours just aren’t sustainable. You can’t work 4 hours a week and pay your bills.
