I have been working at Ultra Electronics – 3 Phoenix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Best people in the world to work with, drive, innovation, designing new and exciting things for the government. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Politics, poor communication, need to learn how to compete as a big business since we were bought by Ultra Electronics.

    Advice to Management

Stop acting like a small business, listen to the employees. Do something to retain your valuable employees. We can turn things around if we work as a team. Share the vision and strategy with the entire company - it is not getting shared down from management ...

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, not too many pros to list
    Good coffee

    Cons

Politics, don't care about your career

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of all contractors

    Pros

Phenomenal talent, cutting-edge products, customers and partners, great benefits, flexibility for family and work schedule, good compensation

    Cons

Rigid processes, lack of attention to employee concerns, public bickering among senior management team, frequent misfires - or apparent misfires - since acquisition by Ultra Electronics

    Advice to Management

Find a way to return to core values that made 3Pi something worth buying. No, we can't go back to SBIR contracts, but...find a way to play to our strengths. We cannot compete with the big boys; the corporate parent isn't big enough to buy us that, but is too big for us to be a small company any longer.

    Pros

    Flexible hours and engineering talent

    Cons

DSR old boy favoritism... Management has tunnel vision,, operational process is absurd and broken. Treat development like production overran budgets and schedules. Management heavy.... Moral.

    Advice to Management

Request feed back from employees and value engineering skill more than management

    I worked at Ultra Electronics – 3 Phoenix full-time

    Pros

Relaxed work environment with excellent coworkers. Many competent and intelligent people that work at 3 Phoenix.

    Cons

For a company that is made up of engineers, acquiring any technical equipment necessary to perform your job is a nightmare.

Many existing managers are provided their role based on merit as a superb engineer. This causes a severe lack of essential managerial skills.

Management/program decisions are primarily made and located in the Chantily, VA location. This leads to the problem of communication issues with the wake forest and Hanover locations.

Company is extremely conservative about providing career development opportunities and will not grant them unless they feel like you are looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Program guidance is minimal, and the excuse is always that everyone is too busy to provide it.

Salaries are lower than the average.
    Employee appreciation is very low.

    Advice to Management

Don't just listen to your employees, but also make changes based on what your employees say.

Restructure your management team to include managers that have the proper skill set to communicate with the employees that work under them.

Provide incentive to your employees so that they do not feel under valued and under appreciated.

Pay your employees what they're worth!

    Pros

    Good pay, benefits, work/life balance.
Enjoy working with the people here.

    Cons

    Uncertainty of future work.
    Not much career development.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to communicate more with mid-level management.

I have been working at Ultra Electronics – 3 Phoenix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are great, nice work-life balance. I marked that I would recommend this company, because it would be a great place to work, if they can fix their noted cons (IMHO).

    Cons

Has a very 'It's a job" kind of feel. Lack of communication from upper management which makes it hard to see where the company is going. There isn't an effort for individual career development - It feels like I don't have much if anything to add to my resume.

As of writing this, the company outlook doesn't seem to bright but that could change with a few contract wins.

    Advice to Management

Give regular company status updates with work load forecasts which includes who is slated to work on what. Try to establish a career path for employees - this would give the employee a goal to work toward and some vision of a career path.

    Pros

Great place to work. Focus is on the end product, creativity is encouraged, good people to work with.

    Cons

Still a small company - drivers and rationale are different from larger organizations. Business processes are not yet fully developed, but are on the way.

    Advice to Management

Keep the small company culture and layer on business processes to drive efficiency.
