I worked at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Doing the right thing for patients, inspiring leader, patient focused

    Cons

management continues to keep weak performers forcing high performers to leave, unaccountable leadership, top level heavy hiring with no one hired to do the work, culture is toxic, expected to work 24/7, team wants to perform but decisions are overturned by LT/XLT, management keeps promoting non-performers/people who don't know what they are doing, employee morale is so low and nothing is actually done about it

I worked at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I don't think Ultragenyx (UGNX) is a bad company. The CEO intentions are in the right place and he tries to keep his employees happy. The benefits and the flexible work schedules are above most companies.

    Cons

I think it's time for the CEO to review his management staff. If you’re looking to grow in the Clinical Operations (CO) Department, then UGNX is not the company for you. UGNX CO department severely lacks qualified management, efficiency and quality. CO has a very high turnover and employee growth is not the priority. Management is hoping to grow with your experience, so your growth is not even on the table. Look into another company if you want to grow and advance in the Clinical Operations Department.

I have been working at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule - WFH 1 day a week in most departments. Some departments even more flexible. Benefits - PTO is 15 days, and additional 5 days of sick leave. Parental leave, tuition reimbursement are all good. Lots of healthcare choices, fitness reimbursements, ESPP, bonuses. Friendly people - people are generally happy, and friendly. Company events are enjoyable, and I enjoy working with my coworkers. For the patients - you really feel that the company's leadership cares about the patients and not only the bottom line. Heading in the right direction - recent years have brought a lot of new HR-focused improvements.

    Cons

Process inefficiencies - some workflows and channels of communication are convoluted and confusing. Unclear roles and responsibilities - often causes confusion as to who is ultimately responsible for decision making. Top Heavy - organization is top heavy, with directors being quickly promoted to Sr. directors and then to VP level, while it takes many managers much longer to be promoted, and often the job scope does not change.

I worked at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some great people at the company, rewarding indications, summer shut-down, compensation.

    Cons

Too many directors and not enough workers, under-resourced (ridiculously so), unrealistic & aggressive timelines, poor work-life balance, blaming, backstabbing and throwing others under the bus are all rampant, title inflation (many hired at titles which are higher than they are qualified for).

I have been working at Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Learn a lot, exposure to many things

    Cons

Over stretched, not enough resources, not enough headcount, lots of micromanaging from certain c-level management, too many directors and VPs (directors are reporting into directors, and VPs are reporting into other VPs)
