I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The culture is primarily a good one. The compensation is average to very good depending on your experience and position. There are many opportunities to build your skills and value for the company which translate to better pay, promotion opportunities, and a variety of work. Work load is average to high, but even when it is high, management works with you to try to push goals- they don't just demand.

    Cons

The average age of a lot of the employees is a bit older, and there is occasionally a clash of generations especially with technology. Overall most of the old timers are great, but if you are young, it may take some compromise.

    Advice to Management

Continue to value your employees skills, work, and reward outstanding employees as much as possible to avoid losing valuable people.

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

As a lab tech I have enjoyed working for UL very much. The work hours are flexible, The work environment has been easy going but can be a little demanding at times. usually when this happens they offer O.T to keep pace. Room for advancement and benefits are better then any other job that I have worked at.

    Cons

Want more out of you then just getting your work done. Can be good depending how you look at it.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large portfolio of services covers many industries
    Employer sponsored 401k
Good benefits with employer HSA bonus
    Reputable and respected brand
Laid back work atmosphere (although sometimes too laid back)

    Cons

UL continues to suffer from inadequate middle-management and employees who have been at UL too long to care anymore. These employees will continue to hinder UL's objectives to be the client's first choice and an organization that attracts top talent.
Titles are applied indiscriminately with little guidance from HR.
Poor IT infrastructure and knowledge of technology systems

    Advice to Management

Hold your staff accountable and require managers to apply more consistent scrutiny and policies across the organization

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Upper management keeps attempting to break the mold of a 125 year old company and how it conducts business

    Cons

Upper management says the right things, but often acts in their own interests. CEO communication is great, however next level down has major communication problems resulting in conflicting priorities among the staff.

    Advice to Management

Promote more management from within, and upper management needs to walk the talk of the CEO

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule. Decent benefits. Walking trial and health club on facility. Middle managers still seem to be in touch with actual day to day tasks and work.

    Cons

Low pay for experience. Behind pay information on internet based on years of service. Company is run fairly lean so no promotion within organization other than standard promotions. Upper management pushes new systems that don't work and then expect staff to pick up the mistakes by working longer hours for same pay.

    Advice to Management

Stop pushing systems that don't work. Fix AEIP so that it means something to the staff that do excel. Think about process steps and ask if you would want to complete them on a day to day or even hour by hour basis.

    Pros

A company with a history of working for a safety world. Benefits and Salary very competitive with other companies. Opportunities to grow and move to other departments if you interact with various groups during your career and work hard.

    Cons

Sometimes reactive instead of proactive in advancements in new business or coming up with new ideas to help customers.

    Advice to Management

I have always had great Managers. Only advice is to continue to provide training to all staff levels.
