I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

People are very nice, capable, and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed, if precariously so. Benefits are reasonable.

    Cons

Training is poorly handled. Pay is a bit on the low side. Learning curve is high, and with recent shakeup, everyone is on that curve.

    Advice to Management

Better more concentrated training would be beneficial to everyone involved. A more dedicated look into program management and improvements would make a marked improvement.

I worked at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexibility hours. Lap tops to work remotely when needed.

    Cons

If you are truly interested in safety this is not the company for you. The safety standards only apply to the companies that are small. If your customer spends enough money the product will always pass. If your report this to the ethics group you will be removed. Some customers don't even have to test.

    Advice to Management

When you went for profit you sold your souls

I worked at Underwriters Laboratories full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to learn and get experience. Company Has a great mission and a great foundation. Really difficult to get fired. Great people. Family atmosphere.

    Cons

Engineers are glorified secretaries. Company has lost sight of mission over profits. Management is blind. Hard work gets you nowhere. Only way to get recognized is to be part of the 'boys club'. R&D Department has turned away from safety and into material analysis only. Difficulty to get fired has breed laziness. When someone does get fired it appears random. Principle Designated Engineers has fallen asleep at the wheel decades ago. Safety decisions are driven by the larger clients. Smaller clients are largely ignored. Nepotism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Technology has changed, update the standards. There are a lot of untapped opportunities being missed. Listen to the technicians. That is where your knowledge base lies. The 'engineers' could not design their way out of a wet paper bag.

"Good place to start career, but can get jaded quickly. Use the experience and leave."

I worked at Underwriters Laboratories full-time

    Pros

    - Coworkers are very helpful and friendly.
    - Opportunities for travel, across the U.S. and internationally.
    - Flexible schedule, ability to work from home, not much pressure beginning of the month or quarter.

    Cons

    - Management at local offices is a good old boys club. Promotion is based on who you go drinking with. People were told straight up that to get promoted to management, they need to hang out outside office hours with the right people.
    - Ambiguous performance reviews and promotions. Not based on work output. Managers can twist ratings to promote their friends (based on first con).
    - Salary trajectory for newer employees isn't very good. Very top heavy company, with many older workers who pull in high salary, but don't do much work. This hurts younger employees since pot for raises goes improportionately to older employees. Younger employees can be doing the same work as older employees at even better quality, but still get paid half their salary.
    - Layoffs about every two years. Company always saying budget is short, and starts laying off people or entire departments. However, ridiculous bonus system still pays upper management half their salary as bonus every year.
    - Raises do not keep up with industry.
    - Many people in management are related to one another. Will see relatives of managers get promoted quickly. Internal job openings go to relatives of managers if they apply for it.

    Advice to Management

Take a close look at local offices; there is a lot of nepotism. Not much diversity, which leads to groupthink. Try to stay attractive to new employees. Many new employees become quickly jaded with internal politics and lack of promotions and end up leaving. A lot of "dead weight" and people in categories that they are not proficient in. UL Mark is everywhere, but no one knows about it, do a better job advertising. Average consumer doesn't care if Mark is UL or competitor. Make consumers care.

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people employed by UL The most part. They are smart and eager to do the right thing without cutting corners. The work is rewarding and there is always something new to learn.

    Cons

Management is one of the big drawbacks at Underwriters labs inc. They expect employees to do incoming producing work without proper tools. Too many meetings to tick a check mark in their goals. Everyone complains - but can't let management know because they don't know how to accept criticism. There is a lot of cronyism. They find creative ways to reduce your ranking so they can take bonus money away from you and reward their favorites. Too much things to do that do not add to the bottom line.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the core business. Provide more relevant training. Hire more people as to reduce workload of employees so they won't need to work too many hours over 40 without compensation. Concentrate on making each employee a subject matter expert instead of piling work on and threatening them of dire consequences if work not done. Treat all employees equally and with respect. Managers should be required to learn something about how business works by getting an advanced degree or something similar.
