I worked at Underwriters Laboratories full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to learn and get experience. Company Has a great mission and a great foundation. Really difficult to get fired. Great people. Family atmosphere.

    Cons

Engineers are glorified secretaries. Company has lost sight of mission over profits. Management is blind. Hard work gets you nowhere. Only way to get recognized is to be part of the 'boys club'. R&D Department has turned away from safety and into material analysis only. Difficulty to get fired has breed laziness. When someone does get fired it appears random. Principle Designated Engineers has fallen asleep at the wheel decades ago. Safety decisions are driven by the larger clients. Smaller clients are largely ignored. Nepotism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Technology has changed, update the standards. There are a lot of untapped opportunities being missed. Listen to the technicians. That is where your knowledge base lies. The 'engineers' could not design their way out of a wet paper bag.

    Pros

A company with a history of working for a safety world. Benefits and Salary very competitive with other companies. Opportunities to grow and move to other departments if you interact with various groups during your career and work hard.

    Cons

Sometimes reactive instead of proactive in advancements in new business or coming up with new ideas to help customers.

    Advice to Management

I have always had great Managers. Only advice is to continue to provide training to all staff levels.

I worked at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

UL has a great work/life balance. For the work/life balance, UL has decent pay & benefits. UL also has a number of opportunities for global travel & work experience.

    Cons

UL has a very political culture without a lot of meritocracy. UL lacks a clear direction and has a weak leadership. At its core, UL still has a Non-profit mentality.

    Advice to Management

Change the upper management of the company along with the core non-profit culture that still permeates within the company.

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people (can't throw a pebble without hitting a PhD), challenging work, decent compensation, reliable yearly cash bonuses, flexible and family-friendly scheduling, generous PTO

    Cons

Tough to get here on public transportation - typically train to bus to another bus to yet another bus. For me, it turns what would be a 20 minute driving commute into an 70 minute commute the days I choose to take public transport.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Underwriters Laboratories full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic team based approach to serving customers. A lot of knowledge can be shared by asking the right questions. Ability to telecommute makes most of the cons less important

    Cons

Sales is king and all other suggestions are ignored

Revenue, revenue, revenue! Ability to do anything that isn't client based (training, purchasing technical materials, etc) is directly contingent upon the current revenue projection.

Very little training provided face-to-face, you will have to seek the answers yourself

Spend a lot time creating and / or learning workarounds

No real team building. UL likes to web-train individuals but doesn't allow teams to meet at least once a year to build perspective

    Advice to Management

Yes, we are in business to make money but if customer satisfaction scores are accurate (and I think they are) we aren't going to expand our base because the sales promises versus service actually capable of is so uneven. As there is no opportunity for advancement, make it worth our lives to be okay with where we are
