I worked at Unica Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * some very nice people - and that's about it. It was better under just Unica, but most of those people (who were smart) have left for Neolane and other competitors - IBM has become a nightmare.

    Cons

IBM Culture. (do as we say - and then MAYBE you'll get a paycheck) Money is always an issue here - whether you're in engineering, sales (even worse), or development - getting your bonuses, commissions, etc is painful - and quite often you get NOTHING.

    Advice to Management

It's too late quite frankly, those that are left are playing CYA with the IBM culture and will throw others under the bus in a hear beat to keep their jobs.

    Pros

Lots of smart people, interesting work to be done, rising company in the field, lots to learn from educated people

    Cons

Still a small company, recently bought out, not a lot of room for advancement, lots of old people, not young

    Advice to Management

    Get more young people

    Pros

The people are friendly, and there are ample opportunities for volunteering, there are company sponsored golf and softball leagues. Mediocrity is common. Yuchan Lee is CEO, he will succeed.

    Cons

Senior management does not communicate well with individual contributors. Communication and processes are not well defined. The bar is very low, and mediocrity is wicked common. Not enough career development; often, people are hired who have done a role and have no room for growth instead of hiring above people's experience so they growth to meet the challenge.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with employees. Raise the bar. Hire people smarter than you. Make room for career growth. Given this, Yuchan Lee is a capable CEO who will not fail.

    Pros

At Unica, there is a good work-life balance. Schedules can be flexible. The benefits are definitely above average.

    Cons

The company has been shaky during this current recession. No real career growth. Communication could be much better. There is a constant growing-pains feeling with a lack of direction.

    Advice to Management

Improve the communication between groups. Stick to game plan and try to enforce it. It's one thing to have goals and another to follow through. Encourage employee development.

  8. "Great people, interesting products, but prepare to experience growing pains."

    Pros

Great people, good location, interesting products, interesting market space - if you're into enterprise marketing, anyway! Good opportunity to move around career-wise; Unica is not afraid to let a good employee try on a new hat.

    Cons

Consultants get burned out very quickly. Not enough focus on training, either on new Unica products or on third-party technologies that Unica supports. Compensation average at best; mine is significantly below-market, despite good to excellent reviews, and my efforts to get it in-line with market have so far been fruitless. Poor communication from upper management to staff.

    Advice to Management

Walk the walk with respect to claims that salaries are in-line with market and be willing to make adjustments to those salaries that are not. Better communication from upper management to staff is needed. Bring back the sabbatical.

    Pros

Unica is a market leader in their space with the ability to win just about any deal they walk into.
They are still a smallish company with family feel, so it's easy to get to know a good percentage of the people there.

    Cons

Management doesn't make a priority of giving employee feedback, training, promotions, career advancment.
Training on new products is extremely poor.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time on your employees. Train them on new technologies and new products. Have a better new employee training program. Promote from within.

  10. "A great place for challenging work in a fast paced environment, but temperred with somewhat of a shaky future."

    Pros

There are definitely good growth opportunities for people who work hard, definitely a fair amount of promoting from within. The work is often quite challenging and, in general, the environment is fast paced. There are a lot of smart people who want to get things done.

    Cons

They have recently acquired a number of other companies/products and are having a hard time integrating them into one cohesive suite. This large number of products has also lead to a somewhat scatterbrained sales approach at times, as well as a development and support organization that is a bit stretched at times.

    Advice to Management

Stick to your core competency, work harder on getting that in a better place. Then work closely with partners to better meet ancillary needs. Nurture your channel sales, those guys could be raking the money in, but you won't train them or give them what they need to get things done.
