I worked at Unilever full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Company Name
    Wonderful products in our category
Large organization that believes in sustainability - very proud of that fact
    Complex projects
Experience will take you on for other opportunities that will grow your career

    Cons

Truly depends on the team and I think overall Unilever is terrific but I decided to leave for the following reasons primarily due to my department culture:
    Limited work life balance
Being recognized for After the fact and not in the moment
    Aggressively micromanaged, little trust
Foul language in the office sometimes
lack of visibility getting to engage with senior leaders
Trying to make the department goals your overall career ambitions
    Just chaotic, lack of direction

    Advice to Management

There's a lot but I think it is heading in the right direction and I truly wish the Unilever team the very best. However, it was such a shame that there was no exit interview by HR. I mean, a survey?? Do honestly read them and take it seriously why many people are leaving the organization?

I have been working at Unilever full-time

    Pros

Getting the chance to work on some of the most iconic brands of the last century. The company works hard with an eye on sustainability, progressiveness, culture and earnings.

    Cons

In order to get ahead, you need to have an entrepreneurial spirit and network aggressively. Not necessarily bad but not for everyone.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice for management at this time. I have no advice for management at this time. Have a great day!

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work life balance, ability to work remotely, get to work on some of the industry's biggest brands, great access to resources

    Cons

terrible middle managers (brand managers) who throw their direct reports under the bus, afraid to say no or push back on Brand Directors who suggest a change in direction (don't even bother to attempt an explanation for a different approach even when previously aligned with the rest of the team), middle managers resort to making up performance issues even though emails and presentations exist to prove otherwise - and when an attempt at singling out 'performance issue X' fails, miraculously yet another 'performance issue Y' is inserted into the mix. The environment this foster is toxic, full of mistrust and completely lacking in respect and integrity.

    Advice to Management

Seriously look at how the brand managers are treating their teams and direct reports. They are presenting a completely different side to you compares to what their direct reports see.

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities if the favoritism favors you. Lots of resources due to company size.

    Cons

Massive favoritism in management, and HR doesn't do much to help out even when major issues are presented. Saw a couple cases of sexual harassment go nowhere.

    Pros

Parent UK and Netherlands, wonderfully managed, excellent leadership and products.

    Cons

Englewood Cliffs office full of narcissists, immature, inexperienced staff that is unhelpful, backstabbing, ultra competitive and boorish, especially the incompetent middle managers

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Unilever full-time

    Pros

Has great benefits and good use of the company store.

    Cons

It makes things a bit difficult to get work finished when there's a lack of communication from upper management that computer systems are going to shut down randomly that runs the entire plant. Also, the bureaucratic motion of decision making. Some decisions need to be faster and more efficient.

    Advice to Management

Communicate better with your staff. That will save you so much time and money in the end.

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ability to work from home; flexible hours; new, modern building with game room and free ice cream; sit/stand desks with ergonomic chairs; friendly co-workers; half-days on Friday during summer; end of year bonus; good company values; holiday party

    Cons

End-of-year calibration where managers are required to assign each worker a ranking that operates on a bell curve, resulting in good workers being let go for "low performance" and causing employees to work against each other to get ahead; usually a round of layoffs every 2-3 years; shifting focus of company objectives from year to year; only paid for 37.5 hours a week when usually working 40+, inconsistent training/onboarding for new hires; cancelling holiday party or other social events due to budget cuts; difficult to get promoted to management level unless part of Future Leaders program or ex-military

    Advice to Management

Promote from within instead of hiring externally for management roles; improve worker morale through more social events; have more consistent training programs for new hires; have managers collaborate more with workers on decisions instead of top-down "no questions asked" policy; change end-of-year calibration system
