I worked at Unilever full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ability to work from home; flexible hours; new, modern building with game room and free ice cream; sit/stand desks with ergonomic chairs; friendly co-workers; half-days on Friday during summer; end of year bonus; good company values; holiday party

    Cons

End-of-year calibration where managers are required to assign each worker a ranking that operates on a bell curve, resulting in good workers being let go for "low performance" and causing employees to work against each other to get ahead; usually a round of layoffs every 2-3 years; shifting focus of company objectives from year to year; only paid for 37.5 hours a week when usually working 40+, inconsistent training/onboarding for new hires; cancelling holiday party or other social events due to budget cuts; difficult to get promoted to management level unless part of Future Leaders program or ex-military

    Advice to Management

Promote from within instead of hiring externally for management roles; improve worker morale through more social events; have more consistent training programs for new hires; have managers collaborate more with workers on decisions instead of top-down "no questions asked" policy; change end-of-year calibration system

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Benefits and agile working environment
Hires talent (for the most part)
Invests time and money in developing people
Invests in a lot of team building activities and events
Promotes culture where you're in charge of your own project; no one will present your work but you
Most managers push you outside your comfort zone and encourage you to do your best

    Cons

If one Sr. Manager or Director doesn't like you/your personality, you're out of there! I've witnessed several employees being told they're not "outgoing enough" or "too confident" for Unilever.

Further, Unilever does what they call a 360 Feedback where your Manager asks your peers/business partners to rate you. So, if you've had an difference of opinion with one of your business partners, they may negatively assess your abilities in this Feedback. This will surely make its way into your review; basically, it's the art of making people like you.

In most companies, if you're underperforming, your manager would give you at least a few warnings and perhaps help you establish a roadmap for improvement. Not here, my friend. At Unilever, they will blindsight you with a rating that signals "underperformance" at the end of the year and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.

    Advice to Management

I sincerely hope that Unilever, as an organization, reconsiders rating its employees based on personalities and more on their work ethic and results.

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible with working from home, awesome work/life balance. A lot of great people to work with.

    Cons

Politics is everywhere but this is the worst I've seen it. Your career is fully dependent on having the right Manager or your ability to play the game. Those that do get promoted are often excellent at managing up but don't have the respect from their peers or people at lower levels.

    Advice to Management

Performance should be a bigger factor in who gets promoted. Have full 360 reviews on Manager lever and above to get a better understanding of the work they really do and their leadership skills.

I worked at Unilever full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    -Fantastic brands and smart people
-Opportunities to work on world-class campaigns and learn as you go
    -Flexible working hours

    Cons

-If you are a US-based talent (esp MBA) beware-you are too expensive to move too far up the ladder. There is definitely a ceiling that most will not overcome
-Global structure meant many decisions were not made by anyone under a director level (local biz excluded) so it can be hard to feel empowered
    -Severely underpaid vs competitive companies

    Advice to Management

You have amazing talent that is being wasted because of hierarchical leadership's lack of empowerment. You have all of the pieces in place to make Unilever US an absolute powerhouse-let people do their jobs instead of churning and burning. And give people something to work towards--now there is no career path for 85% of your mid-level managers.
