I have been working at Unimin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They offer great benefits with competitive pay and there are many knowledgeable coworkers and supportive supervisors. They are a twenty four hour a day operation.

    Cons

Being a twenty four hour operation and a place that retains employees for long periods of time, it is hard to move up into a day position and have a normal life.

    Pros

Some poor managers. Some in Europe are just clueless.

    Cons

People who aren't butt kissers but give a crap are not valued.

    Advice to Management

Figure out why people are leaving. If they haven't left, they probably aren't worth keeping.

I have been working at Unimin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

One of the best safety cultures I have experienced. The company goes the second mile in communicating not only areas of improvement and safety hazard recognition but also positively reinforces positive behaviors. The company is "steeped" in experience and operational knowledge.

    Cons

A new culture is developing where encouragement is given to open up, and speak up with innovation and continuous improvement. There is some noted resistance to change. I believe with time this resistance will be less frequent.

    Advice to Management

Be willing to accept examine new value-driven approaches to the business. Examine potential to reward innovation through spot bonuses. Examine paper load on supervisors versus value realized.

I have been working at Unimin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

With a lean environment, people are willing to share and support new employees in their on-boarding as they see it as helping the overall company grow.

    Cons

As with any lean company, some basic on-boarding materials were scattered and not well communicated.

    Advice to Management

Build a solid on-boarding program to formally introduce and include new employees into the workplace. This will also help solidify the culture, which is a key asset.

I worked at Unimin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good 401k and health benefits

    Cons

Company is going through changes and upper management was not communicating anything. This kept employees on the edge as to whether they have jobs or not. People were leaving left and right due to the uncertainties and stress of taking on more and more work and not being compensated or thanked. Management didn't see the all the red flags. Also, compensation varied vastly from employee to employee despite having the same position.

    Advice to Management

If quality people that have been at the company for many years are suddenly leaving, it's probably wise to look within and see what the issues are instead of blaming the mass exit on the individual employees...

I have been working at Unimin full-time

    Pros

Stable business which translates to stable work in rough economic times compared to competitors.

Good benefits and the health coverage is second to none.

    Cons

virtually zero development opportunity. Little to no effort is placed in gaining skills for employees and there seems to be very limited promotion opportunity.

Pay is below market value in a number of cases.

    Advice to Management

invest in your people. Take the time and spend the money to really build a team. A few small investments will make a world of difference.

I have been working at Unimin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work is really exciting and it's great to know that there's a real opportunity to make a difference in the company. Everyone works really hard and are very engaged and open to collaborating. There are lots of opportunities for growth in the role itself and it feels like sky's the limit with all the possibilities. The people I work with are really interesting and I'm particularly impressed with the senior leaders in the company. They are exceptional in how much they support the employees in their growth and development and are true models for what it means to be excellent leaders. They walk the talk. Everyone is open to collaboration and is eager to help.

    Cons

It's a very lean organization which can be challenging when starting new initiatives. Lots of work and little resources.

    Advice to Management

You've set the tone for the new organization - be consistent and continue to model the behaviors that you want everyone else to demonstrate. Reward and recognize hard work.

I have been working at Unimin full-time

    Pros

Unimin has undergone a transformation in the past year. The change in leadership has brought about an honest and inviting culture which is now beginning to spread throughout the organization. Change is not always easy but in order to go from good to great, it's inevitable. Great place, and time, to grow your career.

    Cons

Not everyone is enthusiastic about change. Sometimes, the handful of apples can temporarily affect the barrel.

    Advice to Management

The wet sail has dried. You've set the course and it's clear sailing from here on in.
