I have been working at Unimin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work is really exciting and it's great to know that there's a real opportunity to make a difference in the company. Everyone works really hard and are very engaged and open to collaborating. There are lots of opportunities for growth in the role itself and it feels like sky's the limit with all the possibilities. The people I work with are really interesting and I'm particularly impressed with the senior leaders in the company. They are exceptional in how much they support the employees in their growth and development and are true models for what it means to be excellent leaders. They walk the talk. Everyone is open to collaboration and is eager to help.

    Cons

It's a very lean organization which can be challenging when starting new initiatives. Lots of work and little resources.

    Advice to Management

You've set the tone for the new organization - be consistent and continue to model the behaviors that you want everyone else to demonstrate. Reward and recognize hard work.

I have been working at Unimin full-time

    Pros

Unimin has undergone a transformation in the past year. The change in leadership has brought about an honest and inviting culture which is now beginning to spread throughout the organization. Change is not always easy but in order to go from good to great, it's inevitable. Great place, and time, to grow your career.

    Cons

Not everyone is enthusiastic about change. Sometimes, the handful of apples can temporarily affect the barrel.

    Advice to Management

The wet sail has dried. You've set the course and it's clear sailing from here on in.

    I worked at Unimin full-time

    Pros

Some really good people. Seems like they are trying to get better..

    Cons

People can't speak up without fear in spite of what they proclaim. Style is valued over substance. People disappear (fired) without warning or acknowledgement.

    Advice to Management

People are still afraid to speak up. Afraid they are going to labeled a bad apple like the person in PR or recruiting recently did in their review. I doubt that reviewer has a clue what goes on outside of the Corporate office. Listen to the people below - management is telling you what they think you want to hear. Staff up. With business picking up and all the new systems that take more time, people are stretched thin. Sometimes its not that people are resentful of the change, it is the extra work it takes to learn and maintain new programs that is wearing.

I worked at Unimin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Vey laid back office environment.

    Cons

Very old fashioned way about doing business. Outdated systems and technology. Company is trying to become more advanced but upper management is not savvy enough to adjust to the changes. No room for growth and many tasks are pretty thankless. Silo-type environment and communication between departments is atrocious. No surprise business is bad and was showing limited signs of improving.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Interview to hire process was VERY quick, a Blitzkrieg. This is their tactic, get the candidate to make a quick decision.

    Cons

There are many. Firstly, two bullheaded union employees on third shift will make your life miserable. If you are second shift supervisor (2:30pm to 10:30pm) Monday-Friday, at 7:00AM on Thursday there is a mandatory meeting for all supervisors, which lasts about an hour. If you are on twelves on the weekend you will work 6:30pm to 6:30am both Saturday and Sunday. Get off work at 6:30am on a Monday morning, only to return at 2:30pm for regularly scheduled shift....which sometimes could be a twelve.

    Advice to Management

Provide any amount of training to new supervisors to ensure success. Stop treating Plant Engineers like gold, and directly assist in the development of new supervisors to ensure longevity and success for both them and the company.
