I have been working at Union Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong belief in supporting and growing employees. Also the strongest possible safety culture, both for field and office staff.

    Cons

Can be relatively slow moving when it comes to embracing new technologies and ways of working. Makes minimal effort to support internal environmental initiatives which are not compliance or safety based.

I worked at Union Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Stable employment with little chance of being let go. Every second Friday off in many groups and yearly bonuses. Medical and dental benefits packages are flexible and good.

    Cons

Provides lip service to diversity and advancement. Set rules for promotion to certain roles which are held to strictly, except when they decide not to follow them for specific employees. Promotes poor employees who cannot do work or successfully interact with others and holds excellent employees (as identified in performance reviews) back from advancement. Good employees are told that they are qualified for advanced roles but refused these roles for technicalities. Say they can't treat anyone differently than anyone else as an excuse to not provide advancement, performance-based raises, and benefits, yet the comments about promotion, holding back, and changing strict rules only for some clearly belie this statement. Expect numerous lateral moves with no increase in compensation unless you can schmooze with the right people.
Open door policy is not truly open door policy. VPs create rules for employee growth and development and look the other way when managers and directors prevent employees from following those rules "for budget reasons." They can talk the talk but do not walk the walk.
Currently (2016-2017) actively only promoting women to management in certain functional groups (regardless of valid experience or being the best fit for the role), leaving more qualified men out of luck, on express direction of VPs.
"Performance-based" yearly bonus changes little regardless of company or personal performance. Recently (fall 2016) moved to numberless performance review system to obscure performance-based compensation negotiations.
Every second Friday off can be cancelled at whim of direct management and relies on working extra hours other days. No overtime actually paid for most office employees - employees are told to take time in lieu instead, but to actually take this is often looked down upon. Evening work engagement via email and sometimes phone is frequently expected regardless of on-paper job responsibilities (against the stated work-life balance focus). Most "fun" activities have been cut over the past 10 years (Christmas cubicle decoration, halloween parties, etc), and replaced with charity-based "fun" (fundraiser activities).

    Advice to Management

Treat people as they deserve based on performance, ability, and potential, not based on trying to look more inclusive/diverse or trying to get bad employees out of your area by incentivizing them. It demotivates the good employees and gives your company mediocre overall performers.

    Cons

Chatham is a bit of a remote town with limited things to do.

    Advice to Management

With the difficulty in encouraging employees to stay due to the location, alternative incentives may be required.
