I have been working at Union Pacific full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great experience. It's fast-paced, complicated, and new every day. The benefits are good, the pay is great, and the company has tremendous potential to move around, not only locations, but departments.

    Cons

It's an old company, so the corporate culture is antiquated. There are also strong apathetic vibes that make projects difficult. It's a typical silo set up, meaning that there are regular confrontations about funding, responsibility, and bureaucratic nonsense typical of a large, established company.

    Advice to Management

Try new things. Take some risks occasionally. It might make us more money.

I have been working at Union Pacific as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

I am able to engage, suggest and be taken seriously in group discussions. Potential design issues I have brought up have led to design changes that positively affect the people who make use of the projects I design.

    Cons

I am merely a contractor, but work in close relation to headquarters in Omaha. I am reminded daily that I am a contractor, only a contractor, and not of the prestige of being a Union Pacific employee by means of superficial restrictions. These include being barred from access to the gym, labeled as a visitor any time I am past security, and having to show photo ID/check in everytime I need to conduct business at the corporate headquarters. I have a minimum of one meeting per week at HQ - Sometimes 2-3. I believe these policies towards contractors who do work solely for UP creates an unnecessary division in a team environment. Furthermore it is my opinion that being barred from the gym is contradictory to UPRR's safety culture in relation to personal health and well being.

    Advice to Management

I idolized working at Union Pacific the whole time growing up and working hard in preparation for where I am today. I thank Union Pacific for the opportunity that has been given to me. The cons I listed are very minor, but do weigh on me. I ask any "management" who may be reading this to please audit the reasons for what I stated as cons, and consider changing them to create a more whole work environment for induviduals who may not be UP employees, but dedicate themselves to UP just as UP employees do. I will continue to pursue a path and career at Union Pacific. Thank you.

    Pros

Long-term Outlook. Union Pacific is a wonderful company to work for. There's many opportunities available for advancement. Management and employees work well with each other to accomplish tasks on a daily basis. Safety and teamwork are key for long term employment.

    Cons

Everyone that works on the transportation side below management are required to belong to a union. Union dues have been increasing over the time I have worked for the company and union members get nothing in return.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    Pros

Amazing benefits, and a culture that encourages good ideas no matter the source. It also has a diverse set of initiatives at any given time that you can get involved in outside of just your core job.

    Cons

It's a big company with a lot of layers. You need to politic quite a bit to make changes to the way things are done. I think this is true of any company this size.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on improving team agility. It's hard to run like a small company, but do what you can.
