    Inconsistent schedules

    Pros

Income and benefits are outstanding. Company tries to adhere very strictly to applicable rules and regulations.

    Cons

Shift work means day shift one day, night shift the next and your schedule changes weekly - total inconsistency. Staffing often does not allow for vacations when desired. Demand for 100% perfection all the time can leave you feeling like you're never good enough even when giving your best. More concerned with making money than doing things the best way - try to use technology to supplement things but end up making the job harder on the people actually doing it.

I think the top legitimately hates their employees

    Pros

The pay, pensions, 401(k), etc were all good. The corridor management level directly above me was also pretty solid, all things considered. But that’s it.

    Cons

The benefit package (aside from pay and retirement) is terrible. Top level management is jaw droppingly detached from reality. Just incredibly asinine and cutthroat. All the while praising PSR for maximizing shareholder value while it eats us alive. Every day is an epic cluster. Nothing works in the field because they fired all the employees that maintained power and cars. Zero train movement is commonplace. Morale is nonexistent. The culture is soulless. They’ll walk 110 dispatchers out the door and combo all the territories then wonder why the remaining desks are completely shut down. There is hardly any advancement opportunity. I can’t say it was ever great there, but good lord The last year or two I was there they pulled out all the stops and began screwing everyone over as hard as they possibly could. When I quit it was the best thing I ever did.

    Train Dispatcher

    Pros

Work was a true 8 hours. Work was online real time transactions. No conference calls. Ample training. Real life resources and subject matter experts to consult. It was the one place I worked in which no one ever made me feel bad for asking a question even if I should have already known the answer from experience. Railroad retirement rather then social security.

    Cons

Corporate Culture. Every level from the yard, to the trainmen, to maintenance, to the dispatchers were not provided adequate tools or staffing to do their job. Hence, every call is a problem. The people that get promoted and retained is unexplainable. Even with a six figure salary, 401(K) match, railroad retirement etc I hated having to go to work their each day. Very little career mobility. These folks fired people and sold off assets (selma farms) to get to their operating ratio.

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. The job is challenging and never boring.

    Cons

Minimal resources provided while expecting great performance and results. It is non-union so bonuses and raises are very inconsistent compared to other railroads.
