I worked at Union Pacific full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent pay and job stability, although the stability part is questionable lately from what I read.

    Cons

Work/life balance. In the operating department, it seems non-existent and only gets worse with promotion. From what I hear, the corporate side is not all that much better

I worked at Union Pacific full-time

    Pros

Pay, benefits, cameraderie, challenging, fringe benefits

    Cons

Difficult schedules, manpower, lack of Sr. Leadership, lack of communication from the top down, failure to explain the "why," resistance to think outside the box or value other perspectives.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Job is hands on and you feel like you accomplished something in a successful shift. When you're done for the day you you're done. The next day starts as a clean slate again.

    Cons

Work - Life balance is terrible. On the extra-board (where everyone starts out) you have 2 days a month that you are not in call and you Omar's subject to call all hours of the day with a 1 hour notice to be at work. Job is very stressful, and you have managers putting in test situations that make it even more so.

I have been working at Union Pacific for less than a year

    Pros

Pay, benefits, I don't know what else to say. You get to go to the gym for free. You can move up within 3 years maybe

    Cons

Schedule, work life balance, management. You're paid to give up your life basically. Only care about you loving trains. Family comes last

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Railroad retirement plus the pension are great!

    Cons

Management does not treat you as a person or even an asset to the company Medical is terrible! Do not ever get sick working for this company! Unless you have 5+ years in, you will never get more than 2 days each month when you are NOT on call. Therefore you can not leave the city, can not drink, or anything of the sort. Great if you want to stay 100% sober, which is not likely working this job. If you have family emergency out of town which happens to fall near a major holiday, do not expect to be allowed off...they will deny it every time and it you still take off work, they will use it against you for any advancement you attempt.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Reasonable pay, work is easy and repetitive once you learn it, no work to take home and due to hours of service laws you can only work a maximum of nine hours a day

    Cons

Most managers are clueless with little to no people skills, it is shift work so be prepared to work nights or on call for at least 2 years, rules in place that make no sense and if you ask why they tell you "because that,s the way we have always done it, you will only get two weeks vacation to start and you can work you way up to five weeks after 25 years. Health care is a high deductible plan, and you need to schedule vacation one year in advance and it can be a hassle to get it changed
