I worked at United Arab Shipping Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was trying to be better, started working with BCG. They were trying to copy Maersk to get better. That’s only thing that I can say now.

    Cons

Work ethic, company do not have any career path for it’s employees. It was in loss, so finally merged with Hapag.

    Advice to Management

    No need for advice anymore.

    Pros

    Great work-life balance. Friendly management.

    Cons

Pay is below average. A merger with Hapag-Llyod is pending, and if it goes through UASC employees will need to interview for positions with HL, which is the only reason why I rated career opportunities so low.

Pay attention to lower managements practices.

    Pros

    Flexible Managers, Laid back environment

    Cons

Incredible disorganization and no real direction. Applying for new positions takes months. Currently going through a merger that offers NO stability. Have to vet for new positions after the merger. ONLY offering 3 months severance!

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    - Flexible

    - Management of all levels are open to ideas from all levels

    - Open-door policies allow ease of communicating with management

    - Close knit team (Family-like)

    - Predictive Learning Index (PLI) test allows "above average" people to easily shine. This is a huge benefit for intelligent people who are just starting their career. This is probably a huge negative for anyone who prefers to be promoted based on "time with company" rather than actual potential.

    - Current president is incredibly active with interaction with the lowest employees and is quite inspirational. It is easy to see that he appears to be one of the rare 'CEO Types' that actually cares about each employee.

    Cons

    - "Office politics"; You can get further with friendship than by performance alone. Too avoid being backstabbed, it is often better to simply give your best ideas to someone with more tenure (and let them take the credit) rather than risk offending someone above you.

    - Growth opportunities based on time rather than performance (Sometimes to the detriment of the company operations)

    - Low level managers are apparently chosen based on experience with operations rather than actual leadership skills. These low level managers are great people, but are not very suited for leadership positions.

    - Salary is lackluster.

    - Impending merger has decimated employee numbers resulting in a much tougher "day to day".

    - Company encourages "good ideas" and strong work ethic, but very rarely rewards or recognizes such behaviors. Ideas that are adopted are often unrecognizable from the original intention, as they tend to have been modified by management in non-sensible ways (possibly in an attempt to "add something of their own into the pot").

    - Employees showing any shred of competence are quickly given more and more difficult tasks and responsibilities without additional pay or job title until they are exhausted. Again, strong work ethic is encouraged, but appears to attract "punishment" rather than reward.

    Advice to Management

Reward hard work and/or ingenuity. Focus on self-improvement of leadership abilities. Allow employees sufficient time to train and learn. Focus on retaining current employees and allow new employees to grow into advanced positions - You cannot simply "back fill" new people into the company in an attempt to hide failures or unhappiness!

This company often has "hot shots" who stay at the company for about a year before they out-grow and move on. Listen to those people before they leave. The best talent UASC stumbles upon is gone long before the company considers rewarding them. Wasteful - Learn to recognize exceptional personnel.

I worked at United Arab Shipping Company full-time

    Pros

They have descent 401K program. The new VP works really hard to help his North America employees and promote open and trust communication/relationship. He walks around the building as often as he can to communicate with the group.

    Cons

HQ in Dubai doesn't care about their employees. Their system Trust is by far one of the worst program I've ever worked with. Their HR team & trainer is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade your system to fit 21st century. Need better HR team for sure.
