I have been working at United Rentals full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company has great benefits. Overall upper management seems to care about making thing better for the employees on the gound floor.

    Cons

A lot of open jobs with in the company are already filled before the job open is even posted. You really need to network to advance in this company.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to mold the equipment rental business in to other delivery services. This is a different kind of business own it and make it your own.

I worked at United Rentals full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It's a good job. Room for advancement.

    Cons

Unfortunately, in this market (austin) I was originally leading up to become and Outside Sales Rep but they began hiring only good looking women for the job. These women had no rental experience and couldn't tell you the difference between a backhoe and forklift.

I worked at United Rentals full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Competitive compensation, college reimbursement, overtime during busy season, opportunity to get training, locations all over the U.S., can advance if hard-working, good at social networking, and patient...really patient

    Cons

Can be stressful, lots of initiatives from corporate some aren't great, equipment has to be turned quickly to keep utilization high, sometimes it can be hard to find equipment for customers, scheduling deliveries can be hard due to limited trucks. Staffed a little on the light side making vacations in summer tough

    Advice to Management

Invest in some niche equipment. Just because a piece isn't highly utilized doesn't mean it's not valuable. If you can help a customer find an odd piece, they're likely to consider you for the high volume pieces as well. It may work to get customers from competition. Team up with a distributer rather than trying to be one. Use a discount from list structure rather than a rate scheme. Give each customer a certain... discount off list, so when rates go up they go up for everyone. That way the discount would apply nation wide but the rate would vary with the market areas.

I have been working at United Rentals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good Pay, Great Benefits, Holidays/Sick etc. Good 401K match, and Medical Spending account match. Good Customers, SOME good people to work with. Originally a great company to work for, when it was JUST UNITED RENTALS. Since the so-called "BUY OUT" of RSC, it's gone completely down hill, as far as their treatment of the hourly or average Joe employee. If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck in a branch that... feels more like RSC bought you, you are screwed. RSC managers are a "buddy club" whose only concerns are for themselves, their big titles, big paychecks & bonuses, and seeing how many new big titles and big paychecks they can create for their old buddies who didn't make the cut. If you aren't part of their click, that includes even up to HR, there is a target on you. Especially if you are BLUE!! They still hate UR for the buy out, can't understand why, within less than a year of their taking over of our Region, they all had their big titles and big monies back. Then have the nerve to go into the branches and tell hourly employees "United Rentals people make too much money". While they make 6 figure salaries and work 30 hours per week.!!!

    Cons

Apathetic, disinterested and very negative Branch, District and Region management. VERY poorly maintained equipment with the new RSC regime. United used to be know for it's good equipment, and RSC for their raggedy equipment, NOW WE are know for the raggedy stuff. It's embarrassing. Can't take pride in what we put out anymore. Too much BUDDY/Clique RSC system in place. If you aren't in the club, you have to... watch your back; even if you do a good job. If you speak out about the problems OR voice an opinion contrary to what they want to hear, your days are numbered. The ONLY thing that keeps them from running more UR people off, is the company is so law suit scared, you have to have a lot of proof to fire anyone (Even the bad people), so that's a double edged sword. You have NO chance of promotion or going any further unless you move to another store. They save the promotions for the hiney-kissers!!

    Advice to Management

Get RID OF RSC!! No more RSC DM's, RM's, HRM's, even the Safety RM is a complete control freak. Go back to what we know, Taking care of the people who do the work, the equipment that goes to the customer, and most importantly THE CUSTOMER!! Concentrate on your construction business and contractors. Stop worrying about the small stuff!
