    Pros

Money is good, plenty of overtime. Co-workers are easy to get along with and will help you with anything you need. Union shop.

    Cons

Swing shift, management is terrible, hazardous work environment. The steel industry is failing in this country and you don't know the longevity of the business.

    Advice to Management

Hire more maintenance and let them do their job and fix the issues that are causing the quality issues in your plants.

I worked at United States Steel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is good. The work is physically demanding at times. Free water and Gatorade. The morale always seems monotonous. If you like to work to live. It is more like live to work.

    Cons

Backstabbing management and employees. No breaks for lunch. Eat while on the line. No breaks unless something breaks down. Do not care about your family.

    Advice to Management

Put management on the job. Tell them to hurry up.

I have been working at United States Steel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It was pay and benefits, but we're falling behind now. Only good thing left is coworkers and most of them are leaving.

    Cons

This is the most poorly managed company I have ever seen. From unqualified managers who can't even offer input on how to resolve electrical issues, to upper level managers who have no clue how to schedule or plan out a work day or week. They have multiple meetings daily, but when it comes to completing a task, it seems as though there is no communication between operations, electrical, and mechanical. They aren't interested in resolving an issue, just in assigning blame and terminating employees. The USW is also the weakest union I have ever had the displeasure of having represent me. I would not recommend this job to anyone I care about. It will destroy your motivation and spirit.

    Advice to Management

Treat your workforce with respect. This was once viewed as a career position where people spend 30+ years and retire comfortably. Now people are leaving left and right. We even have people with 30+ years who make over 100K a year leaving, not to retire, but for a better job.

Management treated employee like trash,...security guards better armed than our soldiers in Iraq. Company ran on fear.

    Advice to Management

Get out of Steelmaking and into foreign nation building.

I worked at United States Steel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent Pay and lots of OT

    Cons

Management Driven, Unsafe, No Culture, Rather blame people then fix problems, No Communication, There always trying
To catch people doing something wrong, No Continous Improvements, NO TRAINING,

    Advice to Management

Stop being Lazy and relaying on the operators and the few great managers, Go to the production floor, Listen to the operators, Understand the process and be realistic, the old culture needs to stop, focus more on safety, stop wasting the companies money,

    Pros

Salary was decent, so were the benefits (401 k match was higher than most), but thats it.

    Cons

Lots, too many to list, but they include

1.) Horrible management - Treat employees like a disposable resource
2.) work life balance - I was working 80-100 hours/week. NO OT PAY. my hourly guys made 30k more per year than I did and I worked longer hours
    4.) No promotional availability
    5.) Hostile work environment
6.) Neglect for employee well being

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your employees like trash. Pay them when you force them to work. Salaried professionals should not be treated worse than the scum on the bottom of your foot.

I have been working at United States Steel (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, Good benefits, All the overtime you want to work and a lot you do not want to!
Willing to get you any safety item or tool you may need. Most of the supervisors are pretty cool.
Can/Will make 100k if you want to or not.
    Good stepping stone

    Cons

Overtime, Geezers, 3/4 of the plant can retire but wont,

Ordering- getting the parts you need to fix things is huge hassle, Will go with the most expensive suppler because they are approved .

Wasteful-practices, Carnige way is flipping joke.

Will fire you if you don't bring a doctors note in when you are sick. Will get fired for getting hurt.

Horrible upper management I honestly think they don't care if the company goes under.

They Outsource everything they can to contractors.
Lazy coworkers pencil whip work orders, overlook things that they are supposed to fix.

UNION is a joke.. if your not in the clique of union pole smokers and brown nosers ,don't count on any effort for protection or representation.

Dirty....every thing is covered in nasty tandem mill butter, lime, graphite or coal/coke dust.

    No chance for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your hourly guys, just because you have some fancy piece of paper saying your educated does not mean you are.

I have been working at United States Steel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You can make money due to long hours

    Cons

3 shift swing in most departments. Forced overtime consisting of 16 hours with little or no advance notice. Favoritism openly displayed. Contractual and Departmental agreements violated on a daily basis

    Advice to Management

It employees with respect and you will get the same in return. Hire supervisors that has some kind of people skills and know how to supervise. A degree does not make you a supervisor in a steel mill. If the requirement to hire in as a hourly worker is 1 year experience in manufacturing the same should apply for managers
