I have been working at United States Steel full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    U. S. Steel is vital to the strength of manufacturing and to the U. S. We must have a strong mining and metals industry to have a strong country. U. S. Steel has the most recognizable brand in the industry and is the low cost integrated mill at making liquid steel because of its mining and coke making capabilities. President Trump recognizes the impacts of unfairly traded steel and has been taking important actions... to level the playing field with foreign countries. U. S. Steel is undergoing multi-generational transformation and will provide exceptional challenges and personal growth for those that are willing to dedicate themselves to superior performance.

    Cons

Decades of unfairly traded steel in a highly cyclical industry create hyper-volatility in cash flows. This requires a more nimble cost structure with a USW that struggles with variable pay and a culture that struggles to change. This business provides good wages and benefits but is not for those that are timid and don’t want to work hard. It’s very hard work everyday.

    Advice to Management

Stay focused, committed on hiring and developing best talent and investing in upgrading assets to take advantage of a more fair business climate. Keep working hard to create a high performance culture in an environment of fairness and respect. Providing more variable pay during this upturn with differentiated rewards based upon performance is recognized and is a welcome change. Continue to revitalize assets...... employees deserve the best and customers expect it.

I worked at United States Steel full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Excellent learning experience - Learning from the great minds that know this mill - The ability be promoted quickly to a higher position - Great salary for an entry-level position. Quarterly bonuses based on steel production - Yearly raise and bonus company goals and peer performance - Overtime is included but it varies by each department. It is straight time on each day and time and a half on Sundays -... Very cost-effective health insurance - Generous 401(k) contribution, holidays, and vacation - Educational assistance is there if you only pursue a business degree (MBA, accounting, etc.) - Vacation purchase program - Additional coverage included. A few that stood out to me was 8-Weeks of parental leave and gender reassignment assistance coverage

    Cons

    - Each individual MA experience will be which department you will work with. If you’re with production, operations, IT, process control, reliability, asset management, environmental, research, etc., you could make a career out of this mill - Cyclical industry when the industry is on a high swing and low times when layoffs comes around - Overtime pay rules vary by department. For my department, if you’re one... minute away from the 12 hours mark, you only get 8 hours of pay - Employees who know the whole mill are leaving or retiring - 3 weeks of vacation time is great to start with for a year or two. Then there would be no increase to 4 weeks until 15 years with the company and after that, that’s it! - Not every young engineer has the desire to live in Northwest Indiana and work in a rough, dirty, and dangerous environment for an average compensation and benefits package. They will say it is a great experience, but not a long-term career aspiration

    Advice to Management

For the Company & Departments: - Definitely don’t stop the culture shift! We must keep up with the times in regards to culture, technology, and the way we do business. - Offer student loan assistance as a benefit. This will stand out from all the other steel mills. If they hire a student fresh out of college, they are very likely to have student loan debt. This would be a great example of Culture of Caring... they want young people to stay. They will likely to stay longer if they receive assistance with a burden that is a trending issue for young college graduates. If the company offers a gender reassignment assistance, they can offer student loan assistance. For the Incoming MA or Those out of college: - Don’t be afraid to take on these positions the mill has to offer. During that time, give some thought into establishing a career plan for yourself - Don’t be afraid of asking anyone questions. Everyone is willing to help out one another. You’ll never know what you might learn just by asking. There are no stupid questions! - Do everything you can to the best of your ability
